Nairobi, Veteran journalist Macharia Wamugo is set to celebrate a significant milestone as he prepares for convocation at The Aga Khan University (AKU), where he pursued an Executive Masters in Media Leadership and Innovation. His journey reflects a broader narrative of adaptation and leadership in a rapidly changing media landscape, marked by the digital transformation that has reshaped content production and consumption.
According to The Aga Khan University, Wamugo’s decision to enroll in the EMMLI program in 2021, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, was driven by a keen awareness of the need for new leadership skills in Kenya’s evolving newsrooms. With a career spanning over two decades, Wamugo has witnessed first-hand the shift from analog to digital media, a transition that has challenged traditional newsroom dynamics and required a fresh approach to media leadership.
The EMMLI program, as Wamugo highlighted, provided him with invaluable insights into effective leadership and change management, crucial for navigating the disruptions brought about by digital technologies. His tenure as News Planning Editor at the China Global Television Network (CGTN) and later as Group Editorial Director at TV47, allowed him to apply the lessons learned at AKU, particularly in spearheading newsroom transformation and managing the complexities of digital disruption.
Wamugo credits the program, and specifically faculty members such as Professor Gachunga, for equipping him with the strategies to manage change effectively. The leadership courses, featuring insights from corporate leaders who have navigated similar transitions, were especially beneficial, offering practical advice for leading in a digital age.
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and the balance between studies and professional commitments, Wamugo found the support from AKU’s faculty, both in Kenya and abroad, instrumental in completing his studies. He also acknowledged the influence of Professor Bitange Ndemo, whose teachings on leveraging blockchain in media inspired his capstone project on content distribution and monetization.
Looking ahead, Wamugo is poised to take on new challenges, including potential board positions and sharing his expertise as a lecturer. His journey underscores the critical role of continuous learning and adaptation for leaders in the media industry, especially in an era marked by rapid technological advances and shifting consumer behaviors.
