LUMS Appoints Renowned Physicist Dr. Walther Schwarzacher as Dean of SBASSEUniversity of Haripur Announces Vacation for General Elections and Kashmir Solidarity Day

Lahore, Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) has announced the appointment of Dr. Walther Schwarzacher as the Dean of the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE) and Professor of Physics. His term is set for five years, following Dr. Muhammad Sabieh Anwar’s tenure as Dean since February 2020.

According to Lahore University of Management Sciences, Dr. Schwarzacher comes to LUMS with a distinguished career in the UK, where he served as Professor of Physics at the University of Bristol since 2005. He has also been recognized for his excellence in teaching and has extensive experience in building international research networks.

Dr. Schwarzacher’s vision for SBASSE is to provide a comprehensive education that goes beyond science and engineering, equipping students with the necessary tools to address societal issues. He aims to create a supportive academic environment for both students and faculty, fostering enjoyment alongside academic and research excellence.

His plans for SBASSE include the development of international research networks, leveraging LUMS alumni worldwide, and incorporating innovative programs like the international mentoring programme he established at Bristol, which connects students in Pakistan with their counterparts in the UK.

Dr. Schwarzacher emphasizes the importance of strategic thinking for students in the field of science, advising them to focus on building a skill set that will serve them well into the future. His appointment is expected to lead SBASSE into a new era of academic distinction and international collaboration.

Haripur, The University of Haripur has officially announced a vacation period from February 6 to 9, 2024, to facilitate the staff’s involvement in the upcoming General Elections. Additionally, February 5 has been declared a public holiday in observance of Kashmir Solidarity Day.

According to The University of Haripur, the notification was issued in compliance with directives from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Higher Education, Archives and Libraries Department. The competent authority, namely the Vice Chancellor of The University of Haripur, has approved this break for the academic institution, citing the engagement of teaching and administrative staff in electoral duties.

This announcement aligns with the university’s commitment to national events and democratic processes. The decision ensures that the university community can participate in the General Elections, reflecting the institution’s support for civic engagement. The observance of Kashmir Solidarity Day underscores the university’s recognition of significant regional and national solidarity movements.
