LUMS and U.S. Government Launch E-Mobility Centre to Boost Electric Vehicle Innovation in Pakistan

Lahore, The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) and the United States government jointly inaugurated the E-Mobility Research and Development Centre at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE), marking a significant development in electric vehicle (EV) innovation in Pakistan.

According to Lahore University of Management Sciences, the launch event was attended by the US Consul General in Lahore, Kirsten Hawkins, along with government officials, industry leaders, and representatives from USAID. The E-Mobility Centre aims to drive advancements in the electric vehicle sector, with the potential to contribute to a cleaner environment by tackling air pollution and climate change. The initiative also supports Pakistan’s EV sales targets for 2030.

The partnership between LUMS and USAID reflects a broader collaboration that includes knowledge exchange, capacity building, and access to global networks. Ms. Hawkins acknowledged the long-standing relationship between the United States and LUMS, praising the university’s efforts to address modern challenges through research and education.

Dr. Tariq Jadoon, Provost of LUMS and Director of the E-Mobility Research and Development Centre, welcomed the guests and outlined the facility’s mission. He emphasized the Centre’s role in supporting the manufacturing and usage of EVs in Pakistan, which aligns with digitalization efforts and reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels. He noted that over 30 companies involved in the EV value chain for two-wheel and three-wheel vehicles have been offered licenses.

The event concluded with a tour of the research facility, showcasing the state-of-the-art infrastructure and projects underway. LUMS expressed gratitude towards USAID for its support and reaffirmed its dedication to advancing scientific research, innovation, and societal impact.
