Lawyers in Rawalakot Extend Strike, Demand Legal Protections and Police Reforms

Rawalakot, Lawyers in Rawalakot continued their protest for the twentieth day on Tuesday, demanding the termination of an FIR against President of the District Bar Association, Asim Irshad, and six other lawyers. The lawyers are also calling for the transfer of 41 police officials and additional legal protections.

According to University of Poonch Rawalakot, the District Bar Association has been on strike due to ongoing tensions with the Rawalakot police. The lawyers marched through the city from the judicial complex, voicing their grievances and demanding immediate government action on their charter of demands. They have threatened to escalate their protests, involving students, civil society, and various other groups if their demands are not met.

The demands include the passage of the Lawyers Protection Act by the Assembly, official recognition of land for the Abbaspur Bar, and the designation of the area from the lawyer’s chamber to the judicial complex door as a no-arrest zone. Additionally, they are seeking the withdrawal of a specific FIR, immediate suspension of SSP Poonch Khawar Shaukat and two other officers, and a formal inquiry into alleged police misconduct during a recent incident witnessed by the District and Sessions Judge.
