Indus Hospital Honors Dr. Naseem Salahuddin with Professor Emerita Title for Contributions in Infectious Diseases

Lahore, Indus Hospital and Health Network (IHHN) awarded Dr. Naseem Salahuddin, Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases, the title of Professor Emerita for her outstanding contributions to academia and the field of infectious diseases. Dr. Salahuddin’s impact on Pakistan’s healthcare system and her role in pioneering the discipline of infectious diseases were celebrated at a recent ceremony.

According to The Indus Hospital, Dr. Naseem Salahuddin graduated from Fatima Jinnah Medical College in 1967 and received Board Certification in Internal Medicine from the United States in 1977, followed by a Fellowship in Infectious Diseases. After returning to Pakistan, she played a pivotal role in establishing clinical services and mentorship programs, helping to advance the field of infectious diseases. Her work has influenced the development of the Infectious Diseases fellowship program, the founding of a professional Infectious Diseases society, and the publication of an Infectious Diseases journal.

Dr. Salahuddin is known internationally for her efforts in combating rabies and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. Under her leadership, the Rabies Prevention Program at IHHN has treated over 30,000 dog bite patients in 2023 alone, and she has served on the WHO Expert Advisory Panel on Rabies since 2004. Additionally, she has been involved in major drug trials for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis and COVID-19 vaccines.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Dr. Naseem Salahuddin founded the Citizens’ Education Development Foundation, which has provided educational opportunities to over 50,000 marginalized children in Karachi’s informal settlements. Her commitment to societal betterment has led to significant progress in empowering young women through education.

The ceremony was attended by senior leaders and heads of departments at IHHN, former students, and residents, all of whom paid tribute to Dr. Salahuddin’s mentorship and dedication to improving healthcare in Pakistan.
