Faisal Karim Kundi, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister, attended the 38th COMEC Ministerial Meeting in Turkey

Islamabad, November 29, 2022 (PPI-OT):Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection Mr. Faisal Karim Kundi has said that the COVID-19 has still taken hold of the economy in the world and along with it the health system. Also affected on a large scale. He expressed these views while addressing the 38th session of COMCEC held in Turkey.

The Special Assistant said the Government of Pakistan allocated US$1.23 billion to provide one-time cash on an emergency basis to 16.9 million families, reaching more than 109 million people, including minorities and transgender citizens. He added that through the distribution of emergency cash by the Prime Minister to the flood-affected people under Benazirankam Support Program, 75 US dollars was provided to each family for immediate living needs.

Faisal Karim Kundi informed the participants that the affected families were accessed using BISP data. He said that the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) related to poverty alleviation were achieved five years ahead of schedule. The Special Assistant added that Pakistan is facing devastation due to the recent floods, which have destroyed the lives and infrastructure of around 33 million people in the country. Benazir Income Support Program disbursed 312 million US dollars of emergency assistance to 2.7 million families through a targeted mechanism.

Faisal Kandi said that to address the challenges posed by malnutrition, the existing BISP Nutrition (Nishwanma) program was expanded, and a blanket supplementary food program was launched in flood-affected areas to provide 12,000 Special Nutritious Food (SNF) can be provided to more than 11,200 people including pregnant and lactating mothers and 11,200 children under two years of age. He said that it is a global responsibility to help vulnerable nations like Pakistan fight the devastating effects of climate change and prepare for the future.
