Karachi, a prominent figure in Pakistan’s political landscape, has strongly opposed the privatization of Pakistan Steel Mills, asserting its status as a national asset and advocating for its preservation and revival.
According to Pasban Democratic Party, Shakoor highlighted the potential economic benefits of establishing an industrial park on the land of Pakistan Steel Mills. He accused a ‘mafia’ in the guise of political leaders of deliberately damaging and closing the mills, which he claims was part of a plan orchestrated by anti-Pakistan forces. Despite its closure, the government continues to pay salaries to its employees, leading to a continuous economic burden.
Shakoor proposed that the rehabilitation of Pakistan Steel Mills is the preferable option. However, if not feasible, its vast land should be utilized for setting up the proposed industrial park. He emphasized that the steel industry is among the most profitable globally and that Pakistan Steel Mills could be highly profitable if managed correctly.
Furthermore, Shakoor suggested that with the assistance of Russia, which has expressed interest in helping to establish a modern steel mill, Pakistan Steel Mills could be revived. He also welcomed the idea of utilizing the land of Pakistan Steel Mills for an industrial park under the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) initiative. This idea was initially proposed by the Pakistan Muslim League (N) government in 2017 and approved by the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) in 2021.
Shakoor’s statements reflect a deep concern over the fate of Pakistan Steel Mills and the broader implications for Pakistan’s economy and industrial sector. His call to action is aimed at safeguarding a key national asset and fostering economic growth through strategic partnerships and effective utilization of resources.
