Aku Bolsters Literacy At Dar Es Salaam School

Islamabad: The Aga Khan University (AKU) is significantly enhancing literacy resources at Twiga Primary School in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania by facilitating the establishment of a new library. This initiative underscores AKU’s dedication to community education.

Building upon a prior contribution of 600 books in 2024, AKU has now provided eight bookshelves and technical assistance from its own library. This latest investment emphasizes the institution’s commitment to competency-focused education and the transformative potential of reading.

This support is particularly significant for the school, which has over 900 students and previously lacked a dedicated space for reading. The new library will provide enhanced opportunities for learning and exploration.

At the handover event, Associate Dean of AKU’s Medical College in Tanzania, Professor Paschal Ruggajo, highlighted the initiative’s importance. He stated that giving back is central to AKU’s values. This assistance arrives at a crucial juncture and lays the groundwork for ambitious future goals, such as creating a comprehensive school library.

Attendees included AKU Tanzania’s leaders, Twiga Primary School’s Headteacher and AKU alumna, Jacquiline Salim Amlungi, school representatives, and another alumna, Kessia Kiwia, the General Secretary of the Tanzania English Language Teachers Association (TETLA).

This collaboration demonstrates AKU’s conviction that proficiency in reading and writing is fundamental for individual advancement and community progress.
