Aga Khan University Appoints Dr. Tania Bubela as New Provost

Karachi, Dr. Tania Bubela has been appointed as the next Provost and Vice President Academic at Aga Khan University, set to take office on July 1, 2024, a role in which she will also serve as Deputy Vice-Chancellor for the institution’s campuses in Kenya and Uganda.

According to The Aga Khan University, Dr. Bubela is poised to bring her extensive academic and leadership experience to the University as it navigates a critical phase in its development. She is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University in Canada and has previously held positions at the Universities of Toronto and Alberta, with cross-disciplinary roles in the faculties of Science, Law, Business, and Health.

With a PhD in Biological Sciences and a Juris Doctor degree, Dr. Bubela is recognized for her research excellence and leadership qualities, as well as her dedication to education, inclusivity, and equity in higher education. Her diverse academic pursuits have seen her tackling global challenges such as bio-conservation and healthcare access.

She succeeds Professor Carl Amrhein, who will complete his impactful seven-year term as Provost on June 30, 2024. During his tenure, Professor Amrhein has notably advanced the university’s research initiatives and academic programs, aligning with the Chancellor, His Highness the Aga Khan’s vision for the University.

Dr. Bubela’s appointment signifies the University’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence and to addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges through education and research.
