Aga Khan University alumni among Kenya’s top 40 under 40

Karachi, December 01, 2021 (PPI-OT):AKU alumni Drs Angela Migowa and Stanley Aruyaru have been recognised as influential and progressive personalities in the Business Daily’s Top 40 under 40 list. Established in 2008, the initiative by the Nation Media Group honours men and women under 40 years who are driving change in Kenya in fields as diverse as healthcare, architecture, law, research, academia, technology, sport and philanthropy.

Dr Migowa, 38, graduated from AKU with a Masters in Medicine in 2014. She is one of only two rheumatologists in East and Central Africa treating children. She is the first woman in sub-Saharan Africa to be a paediatric rheumatologist. “Many assume that ordinary rheumatologists can also treat children, which is not the case. Furthermore, the discipline is also not considered as lucrative as other medical specialties,” she said.

Dr Migowa is a faculty member at the department of paediatrics and child health at AKU’s Medical College, East Africa. Receiving similar recognition, 39-year-old Dr Aruyaru, MMed ’16, is passionate about mentoring younger medics. He is a surgeon and published author who loves to draw analogies from the diseases he treats.

“Sometimes, I join the boxing ring with a bare knuckles but still fight and win. Other times, I lose. You see when a patient dies a small part of your soul dies with them,” he said. His second book, which is yet to be released, has a chapter dedicated to cancer patients. Dr Aruyaru currently works as the Director of Medical Services at St Theresa Mission Hospital Kiirua in Kenya.
