Shadab Khan Leads Pakistan to Historic Victory with Record-Breaking 10th Wicket Partnership

Lahore: Shadab Khan's unbeaten century propelled Pakistan to a memorable one-wicket victory over England in an ODI on Sunday, shattering a 51-year-old record for the highest 10th wicket partnership in a successful run chase. The match, played in Lahore, saw Pakistan chase down a target of 241 with 17 balls to spare. This victory places Pakistan at the top of the tri-series standings with three wins.

According to International Cricket Council, Shadab Khan, alongside Haris Rauf, forged a crucial 89-run stand for the 10th wicket, marking the fourth largest 10th wicket partnership in men's ODI history. This partnership surpassed the previous record of 64 runs set by Deryck Murray and Andy Roberts for the West Indies against Pakistan during the 1975 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. Shadab's innings of 113 from 96 balls also set a new record for the highest score by a player batting at No. 8 or lower in men's ODIs, outstripping scores by Simi Singh and Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

Pakistan's prospects seemed bleak when they were reduced to 154/9 in the 34th over. However, Shadab's strategic play and timely aggression against England's bowlers brought the team within reach of the victory target. A crucial moment occurred when Shadab was saved from an LBW dismissal on 97, which he followed with a series of boundaries to reach his century. Haris Rauf then sealed the chase with a decisive four.

Pakistan's captain, Shaheen Afridi, expressed his amazement at the partnership's success, stating, "I've never seen anything like that in my life." England's Ben Duckett earlier scored a century to help set a competitive total, but captain Harry Brook acknowledged his team's shortfall in runs despite the bowlers' commendable performance.

This victory solidifies Pakistan's dominance in the tri-series, while England remains winless in their two matches.
