Punjab University Syndicate Recommends Rs20.87 Billion Budget for 2026-27

LAHORE: The Punjab University Syndicate, in its 1761st meeting chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ali, recommended a budget of Rs20.87 billion for the financial year 2026-27. The Syndicate proposed a Rs10 billion allocation for student subsidies and scholarships to enhance access to higher education.

According to University of the Punjab, the allocation will be sourced from government grants, the university's resources, and other funding avenues. The Syndicate plans to increase student financial aid, with Rs341 million earmarked for scholarships from the university's own resources. Financial support will continue under multiple programs, including the Honhaar Scholarship Programme and initiatives by the Higher Education Commission and Punjab Education Endowment Fund.

The University reported a reduction in its budget deficit to Rs1.6 billion in 2025-26, down from Rs2.2 billion the previous year. This improvement was attributed to financial reforms and austerity measures. Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ali emphasized a focus on expanding revenue streams and strengthening the Endowment Fund. The university is expected to receive a Rs786 million grant from the Government of Punjab. The budget also includes provisions for free education and accommodations for students with disabilities and those admitted on sports quotas, as well as waived tuition for Huffaz-e-Quran. The Syndicate approved recommendations from the Selection Board and other statutory bodies.
