Thatta Voter Registration Lags Behind National Average Despite Significant Efforts

Thatta: Voter registration in Thatta has reached 49% of its projected 2025 population, falling five percentage points below the national average of 54%.

According to Free and Fair Election Network, these statistics are derived from district-specific electoral roll data released by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on December 30, 2025. The figures are based on population estimates from the 2023 Digital Census, applying a 1.65% annual growth rate to the district’s census base population of 1,083,191, resulting in an estimated 2025 population of 1,119,230.

The electoral data reveals that Thatta has 548,523 registered voters, with men accounting for 54.7% and women 45.3% of the electorate. This translates to 52% of the male population and 46% of the female population being registered to vote. Within the national context, Thatta ranks 88th in voter registration rates and 21st among the 30 districts in Sindh.

The lower registration rate can be attributed to common census enumeration patterns in rural Sindh, where in-migrants from nearby areas are counted in Thatta but remain registered to vote in their home localities. This discrepancy affects the population denominator used for voter registration rates, particularly in areas experiencing internal migration toward district centers.

Additionally, the gender gap in voter registration is notable, with female voters representing only 45.3% of the electorate, indicating a 9.4% disparity. Efforts to address this gap through targeted outreach for women are recommended as a priority for upcoming general elections.
