NA-246 MNA Secures Seat with Limited Voter Support

Karachi: In the General Elections of 2024, the elected Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-246 Karachi West-III garnered only 18% of the support from registered voters, securing the seat with 74,177 votes, which accounted for 40% of the 186,479 ballots cast. The election, held under Pakistan’s First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) system, does not require a candidate to win a majority, but rather to have the highest number of votes.

According to Free and Fair Election Network, the Final Consolidated Result (Form-49) revealed a voter turnout of 44% for the constituency. Despite the MNA's victory, 59% of voters, amounting to 109,555 individuals, chose other candidates on February 8, 2024. The second-place candidate received 17% of the votes, the third-place candidate received 16%, and the remaining candidates collectively secured 26% of the ballots. Additionally, 2,747 ballots, or 1%, were declared invalid.

This analysis is part of FAFEN's broader review of electoral representativeness across Pakistan's 266 National Assembly constituencies. The FPTP system results in members who may not represent a majority of voters, unlike a proportional representation system, which allocates seats based on vote shares to better reflect voter preferences. The 2024 election data highlights a significant gap between votes cast and representation secured, illustrating a widespread issue across the national landscape.
