MNA from Gujranwala-III Elected with Minority Voter Support

Gujranwala: In the General Elections of 2024, the Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-79 Gujranwala-III emerged victorious with 103,708 votes, representing 34 percent of the 302,792 ballots cast and only 17 percent of the 599,139 registered voters in the constituency.

According to Free and Fair Election Network, the Final Consolidated Result (Form-49) of the constituency showed a voter turnout of 51 percent. Despite the win, the MNA did not garner the support of the majority of those who voted on February 8, 2024, as 189,720, or 63 percent, chose other candidates, reflecting a lack of broader voter endorsement.

The second-place candidate received 33 percent of the votes, while the third-place contender captured eight percent. The rest of the candidates together accumulated 21 percent of the votes. Additionally, 9,364, or three percent of the ballots, were invalidated and did not contribute to any candidate’s tally.

This report forms part of FAFEN’s examination of constituency-specific electoral outcomes in Pakistan. The analysis underscores how the First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) electoral system can distort representation in elections with multiple candidates. In such scenarios, many voters may feel unrepresented, raising questions about the legitimacy of election outcomes and potentially contributing to political instability.
