LAHORE: The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore has entered a groundbreaking partnership with six prominent industrial firms to establish Pakistan’s inaugural Chair on Polymer Sustainability and Circularity. The initiative aims to foster collaboration between academia and industry to promote sustainable practices in plastics engineering.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shahid Munir, representing UET Lahore, and six industry leaders, including SPEL Ltd., Pak Petrochemical Ltd., TM Rubbers Pvt. Ltd., Minhas Pipes, IPAK, and Jilani Plastics. This partnership marks a significant step in advancing sustainability and circular economy initiatives in the country.
The industrial partners have committed to fully funding the Chair, including the salaries of one Professor and two staff members, as well as supporting research and development (Rand D) activities. The Chair will focus on cutting-edge research in plastics recycling, circularity, sustainable materials, and environmentally responsible manufacturing practices.
University officials noted that this collaboration signifies a crucial step toward aligning academic research with national industrial and environmental priorities. The partnership is poised to deliver impactful research outcomes, skilled talent, and scalable solutions for Pakistan’s plastics industry.
Industry representatives reaffirmed their dedication to sustainability and emphasized that the initiative will bridge the gap between academic innovation and industrial application, contributing to both national and global sustainability goals.
The Chair on Polymer Sustainability and Circularity is expected to serve as a national platform for research collaboration, policy development, industry innovation, and the training of future engineers, enhancing UET Lahore’s leadership in sustainable plastics and circular economy efforts in the region.
