Karachi: In a statement issued on Sunday, Altaf Shakoor, Chairman of the Pasban Democratic Party (PDP), voiced strong opposition to the federal government’s warning against student agitation in educational institutions. He emphasized the need for fostering student unions rather than imposing additional restrictions on student politics.
According to Pasban Democratic Party, Shakoor criticized the government’s approach to handling student politics, particularly in light of historical bans that have limited political development. He highlighted the negative impacts of such policies, citing the prohibition of student unions during the Zia regime as a factor that allowed traditionally electable politicians to dominate the political landscape. Shakoor argued that Pakistan requires leaders who emerge from the general populace, as opposed to the elite class that currently populates the assemblies.
Further detailing his position, Shakoor pointed out that in democracies worldwide, student unions are viewed as essential to nurturing future leaders. He expressed concern over the outdated educational syllabuses in Pakistan, which he believes do not meet the needs of the modern job market. The PDP Chairman advocated for significant educational reforms, including the introduction of vocational and entrepreneurship-focused programs to replace ineffective degree courses.
Shakoor concluded his remarks by expressing hope that the government will avoid actions that suppress student freedom and instead promote regular student union elections to enhance democratic engagement among the youth.
