Liaquat Baloch Critiques US Influence and Urges Pakistani Sovereignty

Lahore, Liaquat Baloch, the Acting Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, has issued a critical analysis of Pakistan’s historical and current relationships with the United States, emphasizing the need for national self-reliance and internal reform.

According to Jamaat-E-Islami Pakistan, Baloch’s remarks followed a letter from US President Joe Biden to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, which he views with suspicion due to past US actions that he believes have undermined Pakistan’s interests. Baloch referenced historical events, such as the 1971 East Pakistan tragedy and the US’s role in Afghanistan, accusing the US of exploiting Pakistan for its strategic benefits while contributing to regional instability and economic challenges within Pakistan.

Baloch argued that US policies have consistently disadvantaged Pakistan, from facilitating India’s dominance in regional affairs, including the Kashmir conflict, to pressuring Pakistan on projects like the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline. He also criticized the economic strains imposed by IMF conditions, seen as part of broader US tactics to influence Pakistan’s policy decisions, particularly regarding significant projects like the Pakistan-China Economic Corridor.

Highlighting internal issues, Baloch stressed the need for Pakistan to address its own economic mismanagement, corruption, and political instability, which he believes have been exacerbated by external pressures. He called on Pakistan’s leadership to learn from the past, notably citing the example of General Pervez Musharraf’s acquiescence to US demands, to avoid repeating history and to ensure Pakistan’s autonomous standing on the global stage.

Furthermore, Baloch emphasized the need for a unified national approach to resolve internal conflicts and to establish a stable and just society, which he views as essential for confronting foreign challenges effectively and maintaining Pakistan’s sovereignty.
