Lahore, Punjab University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Dr. Khalid Mahmood, has advocated for a proactive role by the academic community in strengthening the country’s economy. Emphasizing the potential of educational institutions in national development, he urged faculty and students to reflect the country’s economic virtues.
According to University of The Punjab, VC Prof Dr. Khalid Mahmood expressed these views during a seminar held by the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences as part of Pakistan Day celebrations and a Tree Plantation Campaign. The event saw participation from notable personalities, including MNA Shaista Parvez Malik, MPA Kanwal Liaqat, and several deans and faculty members, alongside a significant turnout of students.
In his seminar address, Prof Dr. Mahmood likened sacrifices for economic progress to those made in war, asserting the necessity of such a spirit to overcome the nation’s challenges. He highlighted the link between quality research and national development and reassured students of Pakistan’s secure defense and the future potential of the youth in enhancing the nation’s global standing.
Shaista Pervez Malik praised teachers for their societal contributions and called for collaborative efforts to address Pakistan’s challenges, emphasizing the importance of positive thinking and openness to youth inquiries to overcome social divisions. Acknowledging her own political shortcomings, she stressed the importance of women’s inclusion in all societal aspects and encouraged students to engage constructively with political leaders.
MPA Kanwal Liaqat voiced optimism about the youth’s role in advancing Pakistan and highlighted social media’s significance as a beneficial tool for the country if used appropriately. She also called for respectful criticism within political discourse.
Dr. Muhammad Saleem Haider, Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, pointed out that Punjab University’s talented alumni contribute across various sectors and underlined the event’s aim to raise awareness among students about the importance of Pakistan Day and tree planting.
The seminar was complemented by an awareness walk organized by the Punjab University Institute of Geography to emphasize the importance of plants. Prof Dr. Khalid Mahmood, along with other dignitaries, participated in the walk and planted saplings, contributing to the plantation campaign.
