Karachi, Altaf Shakur, Chairman of the Pasban Democratic Party (PDP), has called for the integration of Surhiya Badshah, a prominent figure in the freedom struggle, into the national educational curriculum. This proposal aims to familiarize future generations with the country’s heritage of resistance and valor. The demand was made against the backdrop of the recent anniversary of Surhiya Badshah’s martyrdom, during which public memorials were held, though no government-sponsored events were reported.
According to Pasban Democratic Party, Chairman Shakur highlighted the importance of honoring historical figures like Surhiya Badshah to instill a sense of pride and awareness among the youth. He suggested that the Sindh Assembly should denounce the British-era Har Act and seek its revocation, advocating for a formal acknowledgment and apology from the British government for past injustices. Furthermore, Shakur recommended that the case of Surhiya Badshah be revisited judicially, akin to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s, and called for Dow Medical College and University to be renamed in honor of Surhiya Badshah.
Shakur also touched upon current national challenges, drawing parallels between historical struggles and present economic conditions. He emphasized the need for leadership akin to Surhiya Badshah’s to combat what he termed as economic slavery, critiquing the reliance on IMF loans and advocating for a strategic national initiative to address debt issues. The call for action included a proposal for the Chief of Army Staff, General Syed Asim Munir, to establish a robust institution for financial reform and debt relief.
