LocNet Initiative Seeks Regional Gender Coordinators for Community Networks

Islamabad, The Local Networks (LocNet) team has announced an open call for institutions across Africa, Asia, and Latin America to host and nominate candidates for the role of gender coordinator, aiming to bolster gender integration within community network projects. The initiative, led by the Association for Progressive Communications (APC) and Rhizomatica, focuses on empowering local connectivity efforts through strategic gender policy advocacy, capacity building, and sustainability efforts.

According to Pak NGOs, the “Meaningful community-centred connectivity” project under LocNet seeks to enhance the growth and effectiveness of community networks by addressing key challenges such as human capacity, policy, and regulatory barriers. The selected host institutions from each region will receive funding of USD 14,500 to support a gender coordinator for a 9 ½ month period starting from March 6, 2024, with a potential for extension based on future funding.

The gender coordinator will be responsible for developing and implementing a regional gender strategy, coordinating gender-related activities, and supporting local organizations in integrating gender considerations into their work. This role also involves participation in capacity-building initiatives, advocacy for gender-inclusive policies, and efforts to mobilize resources for sustained project impact.

Eligibility for the position includes experience in gender-focused projects, familiarity with community networks or similar connectivity initiatives, and knowledge of policy advocacy processes relevant to the regions. Candidates should possess strategic planning skills, the ability to work independently and in teams, and excellent communication abilities in English as well as local languages. Technical expertise in community network deployment and proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese are also advantageous.
