From Exile to Excellence: The Remarkable Story of John Bosco, Uganda’s Aspiring Nurse

Karachi, From his early life as a refugee to his challenges and triumphs in pursuing a nursing career, Iranya John Bosco’s journey encapsulates resilience and dedication. Born in Uganda’s Moyo District, Bosco’s family sought refuge in South Sudan during tumultuous times, only to return to Uganda where he would later embark on a path that led him to the nursing profession, inspired by close family members in the medical field.

According to The Aga Khan University, Bosco’s academic and professional journey took a significant turn when he witnessed his uncle’s graduation from AKU with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. This event, coupled with an inspiring message from his uncle, propelled Bosco to pursue his nursing education at AKU, despite the logistical and financial hurdles he faced. Working at Eremi Health Centre III, he managed to balance his job with online studies during the COVID-19 pandemic and later navigated the challenges of traveling 614 kilometers to Kampala for in-person classes.

Bosco’s commitment to his education and profession is evident in his efforts to improve his clinical practices and patient care protocols. His education at AKU not only enhanced his clinical skills but also instilled in him the importance of patient involvement in care. Through sharing knowledge with his colleagues and participating in Continuous Professional Development (CPD) courses, Bosco has significantly contributed to the healthcare community in Moyo District.

His aspirations do not stop here. Bosco is determined to specialize in child health or mental health in his postgraduate training, aiming to further elevate the quality of care for his patients. His story is a testament to the transformative power of education and the impact it can have on healthcare professionals and the communities they serve.
