Qualification decided as Sri Lanka and Scotland maintain perfect record

Dubai, June 25, 2023 (PPI-OT): Ireland needed to beat Sri Lanka to have any chance of reaching the next stage, but fell to a 133-run loss as Dimuth Karunaratne added a century to the fifties he had made in the first two games. That result also clinched a place in the Super Six for Scotland and Oman, who were in action at the same time. Scotland ran out 76-run winners in that one, with Brandon McMullen’s brilliant century setting them up for victory.

Karunaratne and Hasaranga keep firing

Sri Lanka are a perfect three from three in Zimbabwe, and it is the same men who have stepped up time and again. Dimuth Karunaratne had enjoyed knocks of 52 and 61 not out in wins over the UAE and Oman, and produced his best performance yet with 103 as Sri Lanka made 325 after being put in. In a tournament where big chases have come thick and fast, Wanindu Hasaranga again made the difference with the ball, collecting a third five-wicket haul in as many matches in the 133-run win.

Barry McCarthy had earlier taken two wickets in as many balls in the ninth over as Ireland restricted Sri Lanka to 48 for two, but that brought Sadeera Samarawickrama (82) to the crease to join Karunaratne. The duo proceeded to add 168 for the third wicket to set the platform for a huge score. Samarawickrama eventually fell off the bowling of Gareth Delany, failing to take advantage of being put down moments earlier.

Karunaratne followed in the 38th over, bowled by Mark Adair after bringing up his maiden ODI hundred. Sri Lanka kept the pressure on though, Charith Asalanka (38) and Dhananjaya de Silva (42 not out) providing some valuable runs. However, Adair (4/46) chipped in with three further wickets as Sri Lanka stumbled down the stretch, leaving Ireland requiring 326 to keep their World Cup hopes alive. Any Irish momentum from the end of the innings quickly dissipated. The chase never really got going, Paul Stirling caught behind off Lahiru Kumara in the fourth over.

Kasun Rajitha then took the other opener, Andy McBrine (17) before Hasaranga came up with the crucial wicket of skipper Andy Balbirnie (12). The wickets kept tumbling, Harry Tector becoming Hasaranga’s second victim when he was trapped in front for 33. Curtis Campher’s counter-attacking 39 had Ireland within striking distance of the asking rate but he was caught behind off Maheesh Theekshana (2/29) to leave his side 116 for six.

Hasaranga then added two more in the space of three balls before completing his five-wicket haul with the final ball of his tenth over, ending a 30-run stand for the tenth wicket by taking Josh Little (20) with a return catch. That made Hasaranga just the second bowler in men’s ODI history to record three successive five-wicket hauls – an impressive return considering he had never previously achieved the feat before this tournament.

McMullen keeps Scotland perfect

Brandon McMullen began this tournament with a first five-wicket haul, and he now has a maiden ODI hundred after firing Scotland to a 76-run win over Oman. Christopher McBride was pinned leg before for a duck off the third ball to bring McMullen to the crease, where he joined Matthew Cross (27) to add 82 runs for the second wicket. When the keeper was bowled by Jay Odedra (2/68), skipper Richie Berrington came in, fresh from his century against the UAE. He raced to a 62-ball 60 before a mix-up after a misfiled saw the skipper run out, bringing a 138-run stand to a close.

McMullen followed for 136, the second of Bilal Khan’s five victims as Oman fought back, although Tomas Mackintosh (32) and Mark Watt (25) chipped in with some handy late runs.

Bilal kept chipping away though, finishing with figures of five for 55, before two wickets in the final over, including Adrian Neill’s run-out off the last ball, saw Scotland finish on 320 all out. Oman never threatened to chase it down, with the opening pair putting on just 25 for the first wicket in ten overs. McMullen ended that partnership when he had Kashyap Prajapati bowled for 12, with Neill then adding Jatinder Singh for 14. Bowled was the preferred method of dismissal, with skipper Zeeshan Maqsood (8) and Aqib Ilyas (31) also succumbing to Michael Leask and Watt respectively, leaving Oman on 72 for four.

Chris Greaves (5/53) then joined the party, dismissing Mohammad Nadeem (15) and Ayaan Khan (30) to make it 120 for six. A 105-run stand between Shoaib Khan (36) and Naseem Khushi (69) reduced the margin of victory, but Greaves dismissed both before bowling Fayyaz Butt as Oman finished on 244 for nine from their 50 overs. Scotland have now won three from three ahead of a meeting with Sri Lanka to decide top spot in Group B, while Oman are through to the Super Six courtesy of earlier wins over Ireland and the UAE.

Windies and Netherlands face off for Super Six points

Like Group B, the three qualifiers for the Super Six in Group A are already decided, with Zimbabwe, Netherlands and the West Indies all safely through. Three is still plenty on the line for the latter two sides however, when they meet at the Takashinga Cricket Club in Harare. With both sides having lost to Zimbabwe, they will need a win in this one to take any points through to the Super Six stage. Considering that only the top two from the Super Six will reach the final and qualify for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, those two points could have huge ramifications.

In the group’s other game, Zimbabwe will look to make it a perfect four wins from four against the USA at the Harare Sports Club.

Democratic movement not possible without vibrant labour movement

Lahore, June 25, 2023 (PPI-OT): At its national conference on the right to dignity of labour and decent work for all, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has observed that the backbone of any true democratic movement is a strong labour movement that advocates for social protection, fair wages without discrimination, the right to collective bargaining and humane working conditions.

A panel of academics and researchers-including Umair Rasheed, Dr Fahd Ali, Taha Kehar, Zeeshan Noel, Noor-e-Muzamil, and Muhammad Rafique-presented their findings based on fieldwork examining the labour rights situation of fisher folk, textile workers, sanitation workers, miners and agricultural workers. These studies, which also seek to reconceptualise labour and labour rights in Pakistan, were being released as part of HRCP’s Shakeel Pathan Labour Studies Series, named for a former staff member and veteran labour rights activist, announced director Farah Zia.

Speaking on the right to decent work, Karamat Ali, executive director of the Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research, said that a mechanism to enforce fair wages was necessary. Sabhagi Bheel, vice-president of the Agricultural General Workers Union (Sindh), noted that women agricultural workers continued to be paid significantly less than their male counterparts. Referring to fisherfolk as among the most marginalised labour groups, Saeed Baloch, general secretary of the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum, strongly advocated that they be granted pensions in their old age. Asif Khattak, general secretary of the Balochistan Coal Mining Company, drew attention to the frequency of mining accidents and inadequate grants in case of injury or death.

Joint secretary of the All Pakistan Workers Federation, Akram Bonda, said it was important to address the anomalies created after the devolution of labour with respect to trans-provincial labour issues. Hanif Ramay, general secretary of the Muttahida Labour Federation, recommended that the Workers’ Welfare Fund, social security institutions and EOBI be made independent of the government. Zehra Khan, secretary-general of the Home-Based Women Workers’ Federation and Bushra Arrain of the Lady Health Workers Union traced the history of their respective unions and explained how this had accorded greater dignity of labour to their communities. Mir Zulfiqar Ali, executive director of the Workers Education and Research Organisation, added that measures to report and address sexual harassment at the workplace were necessary to make work sites safer for women.

HRCP co-chair Asad Iqbal Butt said that the system of contracting labour had hampered the workers’ movement in Pakistan. Veteran journalist and HRCP treasurer Husain Naqi underscored the need for workers to organise effectively themselves to secure their rights. Finally, Qazi Khizer Habib, vice-chair HRCP Sindh, gave a vote of thanks to all the speakers and participants.

HRCP secretary-general Harris Khalique concluded the conference by presenting a charter of demands that was approved by all participants. The resolution stated that all forms of labour must be honoured as dignified work and that labour relations and the right to collective bargaining should be free of barriers around religion, caste, gender and ethnicity. Additionally, the resolution called for social welfare and protection to be seen as a universal citizenship-based entitlement, while all workers should be entitled to a living wage, based on a decent and dignified life.

Zimbabwe edge out West Indies at packed Harare Sports Club, Netherlands book Super Six spot

Dubai, June 25, 2023 (PPI-OT): Sikandar Raza shone with bat and ball, hitting 68 runs from 58 balls before contributing two for 36 as West Indies fell short of their total, though both sides sealed Super Six qualification. Netherlands also booked their spot in the Super Six with a seven-wicket victory over Nepal, Max O’Dowds 90 off 75 balls the highlight.

Late wickets the key for unbeaten Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe maintained their unbeaten start and took control of Group A with a 35-run win over West Indies. Put in to bat, Zimbabwe started steadily with opening pair Joylord Gumbie (26) and Craig Ervine (47) putting on 63 before Keemo Paul pinned Gumbie lbw in the 16th over. New batter Wessly Madhevere (2) and captain Ervine followed not long after, the latter mis-hitting a reverse sweep to extra cover to leave the Chevrons 90 for three.

But a valuable knock from Sean Williams (23), some superb stroke play from the evergreen Sikandar Raza (68) and a terrific half century from Ryan Burl (50) hauled Zimbabwe back to 199 for five. West Indies twice dropped Raza with the 37-year-old on just two and eight, and they would regret to those chances as the all-rounder led the middle order revival from the hosts. Raza eventually fell with just four overs remaining, pulling a slower ball from Kyle Mayers into the hands of Joseph, the man responsible for both prior drops.

Zimbabwe’s tail added ultimately vital runs at the death but West Indies started swiftly in their chase until Brandon King fell for 20. Johnson Charles departed for a single but middle order contributions from Shai Hope (30), Nicholas Pooran (34) and Roston Chase (44) kept Windies on track. But Zimbabwe fought back, Rovman Powell (1) trapped in front by Muzarabani before Tendai Chatara found the outside edge of Jason Holder (19). The equation stood at 52 runs required from 9.5 overs, with three wickets in hand, but Raza dismissed Keemo Paul (1) and Chatara claimed the crucial wicket of Chase before finishing the job by removing Joseph in the 45th over.

O’Dowd steers Netherlands to victory

Netherlands sealed Super Six qualification as they sealed a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Nepal in Harare. Logan van Beek (4/24) was the main threat with the ball and needed just eight balls to strike, dismissing Asif Sheikh for a duck. Kushal Bhurtel (27) and Bhim Sharki (22) steadied the ship for Nepal but the former was the first of a quickfire double breakthrough for Vikramjit Singh (2/20). Nepal were 66 for four when Clayton Floyd dismissed Sharki and though captain Rohit Paudel (33) led a fightback of sorts, both he and Dipendra Singh Airee (14) fell to the dangerous van Beek.

A valuable 27 off 33 balls from Sandeep Lamichhane helped take the score past 150 but he was another to succumb to a van Beek short ball as Nepal were bowled out for 167 with 5.3 overs unused. Max O’Dowd stated his intentions by 12 runs off the first three balls of Lalit Rajbanashi’s second over as Netherlands started strongly. Singh (30) brought up the 50 partnership with a six before he was trapped in front by Lamichhane, who then removed Wesley Barresi (3) to give his side hope.

But O’Dowd continued at pace, taking his side past three figures in the 16th over.

A sparkling innings eventually came to an end with victory all but assured, as O’Dowd was bowled by Gulsan Jha 10 runs shy of a maiden ODI century, but Bas de Leede’s unbeaten 41 completed the job with 22.5 overs to spare.

Ireland face must-win clash

Sunday brings two crunch fixtures in Group B.

Ireland, without a point to their name so far, must beat unbeaten Sri Lanka if they are to stand a chance of progressing to the Super Six stage, with the Lions knowing they will be assured of their spot if they win.

Scotland and Oman are also well placed to qualify and go head-to-head at Bulawayo Athletic Club.

Both sides have four points, though Oman have played a game more.

Pakistan People’s Party can never forgive those who attack military installations and burn memorials of martyrs, said Federal Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Security Shazia Atta Murri

Karachi, June 25, 2023 (PPI-OT): Federal Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Security Shazia Atta Marri has said that the Pakistan People’s Party wants economic and political stability in the country, an incompetent person has been removed from power in a constitutional manner, the People’s Party will attack military installations and destroy the memorials of martyrs. She can never forgive the arsonists while the Foreign Minister played an important role in helping the flood victims. Addressing the press conference along with Senator Rubina Khalid and Media Coordinator Nazir Dhokee, Shazia Murri said that yesterday Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari made many important points in his budget speech on the floor of the Assembly. He expressed his views regarding the destruction caused by the disastrous flood that occurred last year.

He said that Bilawal Bhutto Zardari discussed many important issues regarding the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the flood victims. Due to Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s efforts regarding rehabilitation and reconstruction, they also discussed the provision of funds in the budget of the next financial year. The Federal Minister said that during the last few days, such an impression is being created that maybe there are some problems between Pakistan People’s Party and Muslim League (N) or they are angry with each other. He said that these perceptions are wrong. Our main issue was rehabilitation and reconstruction of flood victims and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in his speech in the Assembly yesterday has discussed in detail how the country faced the flood and how 33 Millions of people were displaced.

He said that in this regard, the People’s Party raised its voice at all levels, it was also highlighted at the domestic and international levels. Similarly, a formal appeal was made on the United Nations platform in Geneva through which funds were collected. He said that the Secretary General of the United Nations visited Pakistan and at such a time he came to Pakistan when a very important meeting of the United Nations was going on in which his participation is very important. He said that there was a disastrous flood situation in Pakistan due to which the Secretary General of the United Nations reached Pakistan immediately. He said that we have seen him in all the regions of the country and despite the difficulties, we have taken the Secretary General to these regions and seen him in dire situations. He said that the Secretary General observed all the situations with his own eyes.

He said that Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif and Pakistan People’s Party Chairman and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari made important efforts to inform the international community about the flood victims. Played a role. He focused the attention of every country in the world on the disastrous flood situation in Pakistan. They informed people about their problems and appealed for the rehabilitation of flood victims around the world, for which we also got help. Shazia Murry He said that the foreign minister also mentioned this aid in his speech, mentioned the aid of 9 billion dollars, then he also mentioned the promises of the international community that were made for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the flood victims. He said that the foreign minister in his speech also mentioned the steps taken by the government of Pakistan to rehabilitate the flood victims. Will stand by them until the restoration promises are fulfilled.

He said that yesterday Bilawal Bhutto Zardari repeated all those things because we believe that when the government gets responsibility, the responsibility does not decrease but we believe that it increases the responsibility. After coming to the government, people’s eyes are towards us. He said that the parties that are sitting together today are for the integrity of the country and peace in Pakistan sitting together for He said that we have ideological differences with different political parties, but today we are sitting with them in the coalition government. has always tried to ensure that there is political stability in the country, that democracy is strong in the country, that the political dialogue in the country is never closed. For the first time, an ineligible person was removed from the chair of the prime minister in a constitutional way.

This method has always existed in the constitution, but it was never successful before. For the first time in the history of Pakistan, the person who wanted to sit in the prime minister’s chair for the first time in the history of Pakistan could not bear the fact that he was removed. After the government was formed. Earlier we had no plan that we wanted to come to the government or that we were aspiring for power. He said that during the four years of the previous government’s rule, even after the people’s sweat and their cries, they were not heard, inflation was increasing, wrong planning was being done, wrong policies were being adopted. were, distribution was being increased in the country. They were not only talking about arresting their political opponents by the neck, but also throwing them in jails. He said that political revenge was on the rise in the country and the sufferings of the people were also on the rise. but was Therefore, at such a time when no-confidence is passed in the National Assembly by the Parliament, that person says to dissolve the National Assembly, this is what Bilawal Bhutto said yesterday on the floor of the Assembly.

He said that Imran Khan had wrapped the sackcloth of the Parliament. By yourself He locked the parliament. He used to say that the opponents should be declared traitors who are removing me from my post while the process of separation from power was being carried out in a constitutional manner. He said that Bilawal Bhutto in his address to the Assembly yesterday also said that in a democratic country which examples are given, a fascist ruler who appeared to promote the worst populism, hateful populism, on January 6. Just as they called for an attack on their own parliament and sensitive institutions, in a democratic country like America, where democracy has continued for more than 200 years, he said that the American government should take such measures. They were necessary for the restoration of peace in their country, which were necessary for their economic stability.

He said that Trump was blocked on social media platforms so that he could not spread offensive propaganda. He said that the same is true in Pakistan The story repeated itself, all that happened. Fire was set in the country on May 25 last year as well. Even the plants were burnt, the plants had spoiled you. He said that our approach is to plant new trees so that there is a green revolution in the country, we should move towards a green economy. He said that on May 25, the man was inciting his blind followers to burn trees. He said that there can be such an insensitive person in the world who keeps doing such actions. Shazia Murri added that the government did not lose tolerance and showed restraint after May 25. Patience has not been left on the part of the government and administration, but then the day comes on May 9 and 10. All limits were crossed in these incidents. If what happened in Pakistan during these two days is considered normal, stability cannot come in Pakistan.

The federal minister said that peace cannot come in this way Stability cannot come and development is not possible with such attitudes. He said that the founder of Pakistan said that until there is stability in the country, there will be no peace, division will not end, hatred will not end. Economy can develop and society will not develop and this country will not develop. He said that Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also expressed the same concern yesterday. He said that we stand with human rights, we have traditions that we always speak truth and truth, but it is also true and true that on May 9 and 10 our sensitive installations were attacked in Pakistan, Jinnah. Houses were burnt, the flag of Pakistan was burnt, the stability of the country was challenged, the worst attempt was made to harm Pakistan through partition. He said that our past is such that we seize on many issues. But when those who protect my children and your children, inside Pakistan and at the borders, People’s Party cannot condone this crime if the memorials of the martyrs are demolished.

He said that the People’s Party has bled for this country. They have made sacrifices for the stability of the country, offered their lives for democracy in the country. He said that the Chairman of Pakistan People’s Party said in very clear words that the party will not relax in this matter. He said that what is written in the law and the constitution will be followed according to the type of events that happened and the crime that was committed. He said that we do not want anyone to in case of rape, if a person is not involved in such crimes and is innocent then he should not be punished at all but those who are involved with testimonies based on formal evidence can be prosecuted. He said that our chairman also said in his address yesterday that I am not a legal expert but in the country The laws are there, there is also the constitution, so whoever is punished should be given. He said that our first responsibility is to work for the peace of this country and strive for stability. I

in this regard, the parliament has a great responsibility, the government has a responsibility and the biggest responsibility is the judiciary. He said that the judiciary has a role in promoting peace in Pakistan, the execution of martyr Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto is a judicial murder. is a crime in which those involved should be identified? He said that this ink on the forehead of the judiciary will not be erased, it is necessary to consider its reputation first. The federal minister further said that the constitutional responsibility of the institutions mentioned in the constitution of Pakistan. Borders are also mentioned, their limits are also mentioned, so it is necessary to understand the spirit of the Constitution. The constitution of Pakistan talks about running on the path of stability, peace, democracy and politics. They He said that no constitutional institution has the right to play with the peace of the country or to support those who spread unrest in Pakistan. He said that those who destroy sensitive institutions, martyrs, memorials of those who gave their lives for the integrity of Pakistan should not be encouraged.

He said that if we are not on the same page today, then it will become a tradition in Pakistan that anyone can do whatever they want. This is not acceptable for any country. He said that even in the countries where the word of democracy is high, the elements involved in the actions against the state were brought to justice. He said that Bilawal Bhutto as a responsible citizen and as a leader and member of the cabinet expressed his comprehensive vision. He said that in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the way terrorism was fought by innocent people, children and women. As President Zardari said, he migrated from KPK in the war on terror He is an important sacrifice for Pakistan. He said that Pakistan is at the forefront of operations against terrorism. He said that the statements of the American and Indian leaders in the affairs of Pakistan are regrettable, but we should consider our responsibilities and think of our home. We are an independent country and will continue to stand up to our values, God willing. He said that Pakistan People’s Party is still standing today with the basic philosophy of bread, cloth and house for the people.

Our vision is a welfare state; this is the determination of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. He is not fighting with any person or party, but with the country against poverty, inflation and unemployment, and we will continue to fight until all these problems are solved. They don’t end. He said that Asif Ali Zardari claims that we have the solution to solve all these problems, when the Pakistan People’s Party gets a chance, focus on solving the three basic problems facing the country. will give Whenever we took over the government in the past, we did everything possible to end the hardships of the people. We will continue this work until every citizen of the country gets relief, he said. Senator Rubina Khalid also addressed the press conference and highlighted the problems faced by the people regarding terrorism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa played the role of vanguard in the war against terrorism and suffered the most losses.

He said that Benazir Bhutto Shaheed in her last speech at Liaquat Bagh had expressed her desire and determination that she wanted and would hoist Pakistan’s flag in Malakand and Swat Division. He said that the dream of Bibi Shaheed was realized by Asif Ali Zardari and ensured the provision of facilities to the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He restored the writ of the state and rehabilitated the displaced persons which is a great achievement of the People’s Party was He said that the list of services of Pakistan People’s Party is very long. He further said that all the development works that have been done in KPK were done during 2008 to 2013. After that, Fitna was revealed in the province and the fate that Fitna has done to the province in 10 years is in front of you.
