ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier ready for lift-off with Sunday double-header

Dubai, June 17, 2023 (PPI-OT): The Chevrons missed out on the 2019 edition after failing to qualify, but now set about righting those wrongs on home soil in Harare. They first must get past a Nepal side who dramatically qualified for this stage with 11 wins from their last 12 matches in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2, pipping Namibia by a point to advance. Zimbabwe come into the contest at Harare Sports Club in the capital in strong form after winning both of their warm-up games against Oman and Scotland.

Sikandar Raza was the key with bat and ball against Oman, registering an unbeaten century to retire on 110 not out from 67 balls before taking three for 43 with the ball, including the key wicket of Ayaan Khan who made 91. Raza top scored again versus Scotland, with the hosts needing just 24.5 overs to eclipse the 163 posted by their opponents meaning Craig Ervine’s side will have plenty of confidence heading into the opener. “Preparations have been excellent leading up to the tournament,” Ervine said. “There is some really exciting cricket coming up and exciting players to watch in Sikandar Raza, Blessing Muzarabani and Sean Williams. It’s going to be a great tournament.”

For Nepal, the task will be to maintain the momentum that has got them this far, with their stunning qualification followed up by victory in the ACC Men’s Premier Cup in May. Warm-ups in Harare have also been encouraging, with a dramatic penultimate ball defeat to the UAE and comfortable two wicket victory over Oman outlining their ability with bat and ball. Sompal Kami is one to watch after picking up a five-wicket haul against Oman, while Kushal Bhurtel hit a 94-ball century.

Asaf Sheikh top-scored with 76 runs in the defeat to the UAE, and the wicket keeper-batter believes his side have what it takes to qualify for a first-ever ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. He said: “Looking at the qualifiers, we believe that if we play quality cricket, we believe that we are going to win most of the matches. “It is just about playing the best cricket on the best day, so we believe that if we play our best cricket on that day, we are going to win.” Elsewhere in Group A, West Indies will be hoping for a winning start to their campaign against USA as they look to maintain their ever-present record at ICC Men’s Cricket World Cups.

The two-time champions finished as runners-up five years ago to punch their ticket to England, where they finished ninth. They progressed unbeaten through the group stage that time and will be confident of doing so again after an impressive set of warm-up matches. A 3-0 Series victory against the UAE earlier this month was then followed up with victories in Harare against Scotland and a fourth win in a month against the UAE. Brandon King top-scored in the UAE series, while Yannic Cariah took four wickets in each of the two warm-up games in Zimbabwe meaning there is plenty of confidence in the camp ahead of the contest at Takashinga Cricket Club.

“I wouldn’t say not qualifying would be a failure, but I wouldn’t look down that road because I think we’ll definitely qualify,” said all-rounder Keemo Paul. “In life, I don’t see anything as a failure. It’s all about learning and moving forward. “I’m pretty confident and that’s the mood in the camp. We’re up for it, so I definitely think that we will qualify.” A winning start would ease any worries for the 1975 and 1979 champions, but USA will certainly hope to have their say on that matter.

They are dreaming of a first ever ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup after reaching their first Qualifier since 2005 after finishing top of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier Play-Off table thanks to four wins out of five. Preparation has seen plenty of encouragement despite defeats to Ireland and Sri Lanka, with Aaron Jones hitting 89 runs from 87 balls against Ireland, and the 28-year-old hopes qualification can continue to help grow the sport stateside. “In this team, I am the person to anchor the batting so I will take pride in doing that and getting my team to the World Cup,” he said.

“It would be great to grow the sport in our country and play in World Cups. “Not only for ourselves – when we move on, we want to leave something behind for the youngsters to look up to. It is very important for us to have a legacy.”

9th Anniversary of Model Town Massacre: PAT Leaders Visit Martyrs’ Graves, Extend Support to Families

Lahore, June 17, 2023 (PPI-OT): Leaders of the Pakistan Awami Tehreek and Minhaj-ul-Quran International, under the leadership of Khurram Nawaz Gandapur, visited the graves of the martyrs on the occasion of the 9th anniversary of Model Town tragedy, laid wreaths of flowers and prayed for the elevation of ranks of the martyrs. The central leadership also visited the residences of the heirs of the martyrs and expressed solidarity with them. Minhaj-ul-Quran International Women wing central president Dr. Ghazala Hassan Qadri along with senior women leaders visited the residence of Tanzeela Amjad Shaheed, met her daughter Bisma to show solidarity with her and prayed for the elevation of ranks of her mother Tanzeela as well as aunt Shazia Murtaza.

District and tehsil organizations of PAT organized prayer ceremonies in almost each city and town. The main event was held at Jamia Shaykh-ul-Islam Model Town, Lahore, in which a large number of workers and leaders participated. Later, floral wreaths were laid on the memorial of the martyrs and it was prayed that Allah Almighty may elevate ranks of the martyrs. Engineer Rafiq Najam, Allama Rana Muhammad Idris, Raja Zahid Mahmood, Rana Nafees Hussain Qadri, Sardar Umar Daraz Khan, Prof Zulfiqar, Chaudhry Sultan Mahmood, Suhail Ahmad Raza, Tariq Altaf, Haji Amjad Qadri, Tayyab Zia and Mohsin Iqbal visited the graves of the martyrs.

Talking to the media, PAT Secretary-General Khurram Nawaz Gandapur and Information Secretary Nurullah Siddiqui said that on 17 June 2023, the 9th anniversary of Model Town Martyrs is being observed. On this occasion, we pray to Allah Almighty to raise the ranks of the proud Model Town Martyrs and convert their graves into gardens of Paradise. And those who endured oppression and hardships for the sake of exalting the word of truth, may Allah give them the best reward for it through the propitiatory offering for Na’lain-e-Mustafa (Peace Be Upon Him).

On June 17, 2014, during an illegal operation in the name of removing encroachments in Model Town Lahore, innocent and peaceful workers were mercilessly tortured, dignity of humanity was violated, and the Islamic democratic identity of Pakistan was damaged, and human rights were violated. As a result of the illegal police operation, 14 workers were brutally martyred, including two women, and dozens of others were seriously injured. Tehreek Minhaj-ul-Quran workers have been taught to live a life of peace, moderation and tolerance by the founder and patron of the Tehreek Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, who also taught them to respect law of the land in all circumstances. In order to get justice, legal proceedings have been going on for the last nine years in different courts of Pakistan with just one request to the honourable judiciary that it should conduct an impartial inquiry into the tragedy of Model Town, so that all the facts behind the incident are revealed.

Although the Supreme Court has ordered an impartial inquiry into the case, it is not being implemented. The tragedy of Model Town is a serious violation of human rights. By ensuring a legal action against those who had taken the law into their hands, not only justice for the victims will be ensured but also the faith of the weak in the justice system will be restored.

I salute the heirs of the Model Town martyrs for continuing their struggle for winning justice with determination, courage and perseverance. In-sha Allah, the oppressed and the weak will surely get justice because in the opinion of Allah and His Messenger (PBUH) the sanctity and protection of human life is the most important thing. And on the Day of Judgment, the cases of those who were unjustly killed are the first to be presented in the court of Allah, the Exalted. And the Judgment Day is the day when the victims, the oppressed will be given justice and the oppressors will be taken to task.

On the occasion of the 9th anniversary, we also pray for the committed lawyers, who are pursuing the case of Model Town martyrs in the courts, that they continue to struggle to win justice for the oppressed with the same religious, humanitarian and legal spirit and commitment and may succeed in winning justice for them. Khurram Nawaz Gandapur said I will specifically urge the youth associated with the Tehreek Minhaj-ul-Quran to offer special prayers on the eve for the elevation of the ranks of the martyrs, organize Quran-reciting meetings for recompense, as well as express solidarity with the heirs of the martyrs. May Allah Almighty make us always a supporter of the oppressed, Amen.

Chairman Pakistan People’s Party and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari addresses the PPP rally today in Khwazakhela, Swat

Karachi, June 17, 2023 (PPI-OT): Chairman Pakistan People’s Party, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that it is a matter of great pride that he is standing in the valley of Swat and raising the slogan of ‘Jeay Bhutto’, especially with Dr. Haider Ali joining the Pakistan People’s Party. In the past four years, it is unfortunate that neither the PTI nor the government had the space for people who wanted to see their land, Swat prosper. In contrast, those who had materialistic aspirations would tag along with Imran Khan. Dr. Haider is a man who represented the people of Swat in the National Assembly and not once was he a part of those making hue and cry or abusing others, he was in the wrong party. The people of Swat are witness to how the PPP fought for them and when terror was imposed on the land, it was the PPP that strived to bring peace to the region. Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto accepted martyrdom for the sake of the country and was not once deterred just like the people of Swat by those spreading terror.

The PPP made the decision to wipe out all those who wished to colour the Swat valley red with blood. Our sacrifices and those rendered by the Police and Army led to the establishing of peace in the region. However, Khan brought back the very same terrorists who we had chased out. The people of Swat deserve tribute for taking to the streets to demand for peace and stability in their region. Today, we would like to reiterate that the PPP is standing shoulder to shoulder with the people of Swat and will do whatever is possible to help the region progress. We are willing to work with Afghanistan on a bilateral level to bring economic prosperity in the region by realising the importance of peace and security. We need to extend the message of peace to the terrorists, to convince them to drop their weapons.

We do not wish to hold another operation or initiate another war; the people have had enough of those and now deserve peace. However, we are not willing to bow before any terrorists for the sake of peace. We know that PPP and the people of Swat share the same sentiments as neither have surrendered before terrorism. We also need to put a stop to the newly introduced political terrorism. Each and every citizen of Pakistan condemns the tragedy of May 9. All stakeholders as well as political parties share the same views regarding this, which is to make an example out of the culprits. If they are forgiven once, then there would be no rule of law, government or democracy in the country.

No other party compete with the PPP when it comes to the sacrifices it has rendered for the people, Quaid-e-Awam Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto preferred being sent to the gallows over comprising on the interest of the nation. Similarly, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto had the opportunity to wreak havoc over General Zia’s government when she was welcomed by a record-breaking mammoth gathering, but she chose peace for her people and country.

I was 19 when Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto was martyred, Chairman Bilawal said. Had we raised any other slogan at the time, or demanded for revenge by pointing towards the President House where Musharraf was sitting, the country would have burned to the ground. However, even at that time, we reiterated that democracy is the best revenge. Those who were brought into politics and supported for three decades by the umpire’s signals, declared war with the state after merely spending a night in prison.

The PPP believes that strict action should be taken against terrorists and political terrorists. The people of Swat know that whenever the common, poor people were taken care of, it was during the PPP’s rule. It was during the tenures of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma when the people of Swat attained ownership rights as well as employment. Quaid-e-Awam would give free passports to the youngsters and send them abroad to allow them to make a mark internationally. During the rule of President Zardari, similar principles were applied and people were given employment. The selected puppet however, did the opposite and snatched jobs from the people.

We believe that the economic situation is such that it is troubling every citizen. The PPP believes that its manifesto, one that is the manifesto of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto is an asset that we have inherited and contains the answers and solutions to all the political challenges we face. We believe that the PPP is not competing with any other entity or political party, but with hunger, poverty, inflation and unemployment. The day that we eradicate these problems with the help of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s manifesto is not far.

We want for the new generation to support us in our mission to help the country prosper. The time has come for them to be given the opportunity, and if they avail it by supporting us, then no problem would ever be big enough. We need the support of politicians who feel for the people and actually wish to bring about change. The majority of the country’s population is constituted of youngsters and it is the PPP’s priority to integrate them into the decision-making process. In fourteen months, a young Foreign Minister has achieved what no other predecessor could. There is huge potential all over the world and we know just how willing the world is to work and cooperate with us.

When we were combatting climate catastrophes, the world stood with us at a time when certain circles were predicting that it was too busy with the Russia-Ukraine conflict to pay us any heed. The world needs young people, it wants both low-skilled and high-skilled people, with the only condition of us stabilising ourselves. We will surely work together and strive to show our elders that when given the opportunity, youngsters can make the most of it. When a young politician had proposed to bring forth a no-confidence motion to drive out the selected puppet, it was met by scepticism by the elders but it is this very democratic path that proved to be successful. The PPP is geared up for the elections and is ready to make history just as it did in the LG elections. We encourage our allies to prepare themselves and contest the elections so that the next government derives solutions to the problems faced by the people.

As far as the budget is concerned, the PPP sent its high-level committee members to the PM and his team, expressing that the budget contained little of the PPP’s input. The federal government had promised the world and provincial governments that it would match the funds spent on flood victims. Hence, we have approached our allies to make them understand that it is imperative that we look after the flood victims in our budget. We have no doubts over the intentions of the PM, as he witnessed the destruction with his own eyes. However, we would like to ask the PM to introspect within his team and hold those hindering this process accountable. We hope that the finance minister, Ishaq Dar and his team would address our concerns and work towards resolving them.

Chairman Bilawal urged the party workers to initiate the process for electoral campaigning as the PPP is ready to avail the opportunity to work towards the realisation of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s dream.
