Karachi, May 18, 2023 (PPI-OT): The Human Rights Department of the Government of Sindh has expressed its commitment to implement the international conventions in the province and implement its zero tolerance policy against human rights violations in collaboration with other relevant institutions. is committed to making it more effective and efficient. Sindh Human Rights Department organized an awareness session on “Orientation Session on International Human Rights Responsibilities and Procedures for its Implementation at Federal and Provincial Levels” at a local hotel, in which Revenue, Police and officers and representatives of law departments as well as organizations working for the protection and rights of vulnerable sections of the society including women and children also participated.

Speaking on this occasion, Surendra Vilasai said that Sindh province is ahead of other provinces in terms of preventing human rights violations and providing protection and justice to the victims. He pointed out that the fourth biennial GSP+ review of Pakistan was completed at the end of 2022 and the European Commission submitted the report to the European Parliament. He said that the GSP+ scheme is ending this year and the above review report will play an important role in determining the next GSP+ award to Pakistan by the European Union. He further said that under GSP+, Pakistan’s annual income is between 1.5 billion to 2 billion dollars.

Surendra Vilasai said that the groundwork for GSP+ was done during the government led by former President Asif Ali Zardari. He said that Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has always had an unequivocal stand regarding human rights that no public party and democratic government can even imagine expediency on human rights. He further said that the Provincial Human Rights Department is following the vision of Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and the clear policy of the Government of Sindh. Surendra Vilasai emphasized that only the federal and provincial level mechanism for prevention of human rights violations is not enough, it needs to be taken to the district level. He said that the scope of the Human Rights Department is now being extended from the divisional level to the district level.

Sindh Human Rights Department Secretary Javed Sibghatullah Mehr gave a detailed briefing to the participants regarding the scope, performance and future planning of his department. He said that various measures are being taken by his department for immediate redressal of complaints of human rights violations and provision of justice. He said that an automation mechanism is being created through technology, through which all the concerned institutions will come on one page after receiving the complaint of the affected person. He said that there is a need to create an immediate and effective mechanism between the police department and the human rights department to redress the complaints of the victims and provide justice. He said that district human rights committees will be formed on behalf of his department and Deputy Commissioners should pay attention to this.

During the session, Human Rights Commission Sindh Chairperson Iqbal Ditho highlighted the institutional mechanism at the official level regarding human rights. DIG Javed Jaskani, former Secretary Sindh Abdul Rahim Soomro, Executive Coordinator of Treaty Implementation Cell of Sindh Human Rights Department Jameel Junejo and Member of Human Rights Commission Sindh Zulfiqar Shah also spoke. Officers participating in the session and representatives of various departments appreciated the organization of the awareness session by the Human Rights Department and emphasized that such programs are very important for the promotion and protection of human rights.

ICCI calls for Pak-Turkiye FTA to boost bilateral trade

Islamabad, May 18, 2023 (PPI-OT): S.M. Tanveer, Minister for Industries and Commerce of Punjab said that Pakistan and Turkiye enjoy exemplary friendship and it is the right time that the business community of both countries should strive for developing strong trade ties that would be more beneficial for both nations. He said this while talking to Enes Malik Cetin, Commercial Counsellor of Turkiye during his visit to Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI).

Speaking on the occasion, Ahsan Zafar Bakhtawari, President, Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) said that there are immense business opportunities between Pakistan and Turkiye and both countries should sign a free trade agreement to boost bilateral trade up to their actual potential. He said that Pakistan and Turkiye had signed a preferential trade agreement in August 2022, which came into effect from 1st May 2023 and hoped that it would contribute to improve bilateral trade between the two countries.

He said that the PTA has provided preferential access to the many products of both countries in each other’s market and emphasized that the private sectors of both countries should take maximum benefit of it to increase bilateral trade volume. He said that the embassy should share a list of its top imports with ICCI so that the business community can explore the possibility of exporting more products to Turkiye.

Enes Malik Cetin, Commercial Counsellor of Turkiye said that his country considers Pakistan a very close friend and wants to strengthen trade ties with it. He said that keeping in view the success of PTA, Turkiye would consider FTA with Pakistan. He stressed for close collaboration of ICCI with trade associations of Turkiye including MUSIAD in order to explore all untapped areas of mutual cooperation between the two countries. He said that direct business linkages between the private sectors would help enhance trade and economic ties between Pakistan and Turkiye and assured that his embassy would cooperate with ICCI in this regard.

Faad Waheed, Senior Vice President ICCI said that Pakistan can export many products to Turkiye including textiles, pharmaceuticals, cement, marble at competitive prices and stressed that Turkiye should consider importing these products from Pakistan. Engr. Azhar ul Islam Zafar, Vice President ICCI stressed for regular interaction between ICCI and Turkish Embassy to explore new areas of promoting business relations between Pakistan and Turkiye.

Khalid Iqbal Malik, former President ICCI said that both countries should focus on strong connectivity between their importers and exporters in order to capitalize on all possible areas of bilateral trade promotion. Zafar Bakhtawari, former President and Secretary General UBG said that both countries should develop direct air and railways links that would help boost bilateral trade and economic ties. Waqar Bakhtawari, President Chakwal Chamber of Commerce, Ameer Hamza, Rizwan Cheena, Ch. Javed Iqbal, Humayun Kabir, Munizeh Majid, Ch. Muhammad Ali and others were also present on the occasion.

36% Pakistanis primarily speak Punjabi at home, 23% speak Urdu, 16% speak Pashto: Gallup and Gilani Pakistan

Islamabad, May 18, 2023 (PPI-OT): According to a survey conducted by Gallup and Gilani Pakistan, 36% Pakistanis primarily speak Punjabi at home, 23% speak Urdu, 16% speak Pashto.

According to Census 2017: Punjabi is the predominant mother tongue spoken by 38.78% of the total population followed by Pushto 18.24% and Sindhi 14.57%. The share of other languages spoken in Pakistan are: Siraiki 12.19%, Urdu 7.08%, Balochi 3.02%, Hindko 2.44%, Brahvi 1.24%, Kashmiri 0.17% and others 2.26%.

Comparison between findings of this poll and census results show that large number of Pakistanis now speak Urdu at home despite Urdu not being their mother tongue. Urdu is mother tongue of 7% Pakistanis but 23% say they speak it at home.

A nationally representative sample of adult men and women from across the country, was asked the question “Please tell us in which language do you usually read and write?” In response, 36% said Punjabi, 23% said Urdu, 16% said Pashto, 8% said Saraiki, 7% said Sindhi, 4% said Hindko, 2% said Balochi and 4% said others.
