Participation of FYP of COMSATS University Islamabad, Wah Campus in NASTP Exhibition

Lahore, May 08, 2023 (PPI-OT): The COMSATS University Islamabad, Wah Campus, actively took part in the exhibition of final year projects jointly organized by the National Aerospace Science and Technology Park (NASTP) and their Turkish Counterpart held from January 11th – 13th, 2023 at NASTP. Eleven shortlisted Final Year Projects from the Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering Department were displayed to showcase the learning and technical strength of the students of CUI Wah Campus. The students showcase their projects under the supervision of In-charge Career Development Center, Dr. Mushtaq Ahmad Bhatti, Assistant Professor, Dr. Mudassar Raza from the Department of Computer Science and Assistant Professor, Dr. Shoaib Naseem from the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The aim of the exhibition was to foster the research, innovation and developments in the field of aviation and IT by providing an opportunity to academia to showcase their innovations to audiences from the industry and academia.

Prof. Ahmet Pinarbasi, Vice President from Turkish Aerospace Academy (TAA) interacted with the students and showed keen interest in The Department of Mechanical Engineering projects of CUI Wah Campus He showed his will to establish an agreement of research collaboration with COMSATS University Islamabad. He further explained that Turkish Aerospace Academy gives an opportunity to students of Universities with whom TAA has a formal MOU for internships of one month at TAA Ankara, Turkiye.

In the concluding remarks, Chief Director (Training) NASTP expressed his hope that the 6th JWG arranged at NASTP would result in continued collaboration between academia of Pakistan and Turkey in mutual areas of research and development.

Karachi, May 08, 2023 (PPI-OT): Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology organized the Torch Relay Ceremony for the 34th edition of the National Games to be held in Quetta. Chief Guest of the event was Administrator Karachi, Dr. Saif ur Rehman and it was attended by the Director Sports, Higher Education Commission, Javed Ali Memon, Secretary of Pakistan Olympic Association, Khalid Mahmood, Secretary of Sindh Olympic Association, Ahmed Ali Rajpoot, Director General, Pakistan Sports Board, Shoaib Khosa, Director General Balochistan Sports Board, Dra Khan, including former Olympians (Hockey) Hanif Khan, Nasir Ali, Haseem Khan, international hockey player Muhammad Ali Khan and others.

Addressing the event, Administrator Karachi, Dr. Saif ur Rehman, said that Torch Relay symbolizes the value of excellence, friendship and respect. It brings people together from all walks of life, providing opportunity to showcase Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage and diversity while promoting unity and harmony. After 2 years, National Games will be held in Sindh. Quality and worth of the university is measured by the skills and knowledge of the Alumni.

Speaking on the auspicious occasion, Vice Chancellor SSUET, Prof. Dr. Vali Uddin, said that it is a proud moment for us that Sir Syed University has the privilege to conduct Torch Relay for National Games. The core aim of the National Games is to create and enhance sporting opportunities in Pakistan. Sports help youth to stay in shape and make them learn how to organize their time, boost friendships, and build relationships with their companions. People from different regions of Pakistan come together to celebrate the National Games, creating cross-culture harmony.

Appreciating the role of HEC in the promotion of sports, he said that we are thankful to HEC for choosing Sir Syed University for today’s ceremony and the HEC Sports Division is playing a vital role in developing quality sports in Pakistan by patronizing healthy sports activities. Credit goes to the Chairman HEC and Director Sports HEC, Mr. Javed Ali Memon for holding such a remarkable event. Sports have an effective role to play when it comes to nation-building and it helps in elevating qualities like discipline, determination, teamwork and a passion for fitness in the psyche of a nation.

Registrar SSUET, Syed Sarfraz Ali said that I feel bound to appreciate the efforts of the Pakistan Olympic Association for the development of sports in Pakistan. HEC is providing a platform for students, to show their skills and talent and to groom themselves for sports activities at national and international levels. Being one of the stakeholders in the National Games HEC is playing a significant role in the promotion of sports in Pakistan. SSUET always stands with HEC in academic and sports activities.

Director Sports HEC, Javed Ali Memon said that HEC has taken an initiative to promote sports in Pakistan and bring out talent at grass root level. Director Sports SSUET, Mubahsir Mukhtar said that sports activities are useful to promote physical and mental health as well as supporting education, boosting employment prospects, and improving social cohesion. He informed that SSUET student Umna Fatima is a player of HEC Hockey team, similarly, Noman Uddin has been appointed as Coach of HEC Volleyball team, while Sports Officer Jawaid Iqbal is a part of Tug of War event.

Renowned sports journalist, Yahya Hussaini conducted the event beautifully. He has the fair knowledge of sports and rich information about games that helps him in comparing. He is revered for his candid analysis regarding sports on TV channels.

One Day Workshop On Hydrological Modelling Application of SWAT

Lahore, May 08, 2023 (PPI-OT): The UNESCO Chair on Knowledge Systems for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) organized a one-day Workshop on the Hydrological Modelling Application of SWAT on February 28, 2023 in collaboration with the Department of Civil Engineering. The event started with a welcome note presented by the Head of the Civil Engineering Department, Dr. Tahir Mahmood. He presented the UNESCO Water Chair role and highlighted the importance of the Chair being an effective platform for knowledge sharing. The aim of this workshop was to create familiarity with Hydrological Modelling Techniques, Soil and Water Assessment Model (SWAT) for hydrological studies, water quality, sediment, effects of climate change through lectures and simulations, establishing an understanding of databases, soils, topography and climate-related data handling, simulation of the model and its comparison with the observed data was also explained to validate the whole procedure.

The resource person, member UNESCO Chair on Knowledge Systems for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), CUI Wah Campus/Lecturer, Engr. Summera Fahmi from the Department of Civil Engineering shared her knowledge and expertise with the participants. She conducted an interactive learning session with the demonstration of exercises by using ArcSWAT. The Workshop covered the Hydrological modelling techniques to identify the watersheds, Soil, and Water Assessment Model (SWAT) of the Gilgat, Pakistan area to study, water quality, sediment, and effects of climate change. The researchers from the CUI Abbottabad Campus, Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR), and graduate/ undergraduate students from CU Wah Campus attended the workshop.

The UNESCO Chair on Knowledge Systems for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), Prof. Dr. Muhammad Abid, T.I., in his closing remarks emphasized capacity building in the adaptation of improving technologies in research and development. He appreciated the efforts of the resource person and the team of organizers especially the ICE chapter of CUI Wah Campus on effectively conducting this workshop. The Chair also thanked all participants for their participation and for making this event a success.

Samira Sahar Jamil successfully defends PhD thesis on Homology Theory of Digital Images under the supervision of Dr. Danish Ali, receives praise from External Examiners and Mathematical Sciences department chairperson

Karachi, May 08, 2023 (PPI-OT): Samira Sahar Jamil, PhD Scholar of Mathematical Sciences department, successfully defended her PhD thesis titled ‘Homology Theory of Digital Images’. The thesis was supervised by Dr. Danish Ali, Assistant Professor and Program Director MS and PhD Mathematics programs.

The External Examiners were from Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) namely, Professor, Dr. Haniya Azam and Professor, Dr. Shaheen Nazeer. Dr. Hisham Bin Zubair, Chairperson, Mathematical Sciences department chaired the session. We congratulate Dr. Samira Sahar Jamil for accomplishing this remarkable feat and wish her success in all her future pursuits.

Webinar on Net Zero on Campus, 20 April 2022

Lahore, May 08, 2023 (PPI-OT): Net-Zero on Campus: Insights and Strategies Shared in Monash Energy Institute’s Informative Webinar On April 20th, 2023, the Monash Energy Institute organized an informative webinar on ‘Net-Zero on Campus’, showcasing the efforts undertaken by universities to assess their carbon footprint and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Dr. Mohsin Raza from CCRD attended the webinar. During the webinar, representatives from different universities shared their methodologies and outcomes of the studies conducted on carbon footprint. Financial strategies and innovative ways to move towards a carbon-neutral environment were also discussed.

The Q and A session provided valuable insights into the participants’ queries on the topic. The organizers also shared presentation slides, an online toolkit, and a carbon performance report for further reference and utilization. The efforts by universities towards a sustainable future have become increasingly important in recent years, and this webinar served as an excellent platform to showcase the initiatives taken by universities worldwide. It is inspiring to see the collaborative efforts and knowledge-sharing amongst universities and stakeholders towards achieving the common goal of carbon neutrality. This webinar was a step towards creating a better understanding of the impact of carbon footprint and the measures that can be taken to mitigate it.

Overall, the ‘Net-Zero on Campus’ webinar was an informative and engaging event. It provided the participants with valuable insights, knowledge, and resources to promote sustainability initiatives on their campuses. We must continue to work towards creating a sustainable future, and events like these are essential in creating awareness and facilitating change. It is a positive sign that universities and institutions are taking such initiatives towards a sustainable future, and we must continue to support and encourage these efforts.

CPD Seminar “Impact of Machine Learning in The Field of Civil Engineering”

Lahore, May 08, 2023 (PPI-OT): One day CPD seminar “Impact of Machine Learning in the Field of Civil Engineering” was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering on October 13, 2022. The guest speaker, Dr. Muhammad Faisal Javaid, Head, Civil Engineering Department from COMSATS University Islamabad, Abbottabad Campus delivered seminar. The speaker has an experience of over 10 years in the structural modelling, analysis and design of buildings and other structures.

The speaker delivered the key features of application of machine learning and models of performance- based evaluation to build facilities under extreme loads. He shared real case studies and explained solutions of practical issues by using ML Techniques and demonstrated GeneXpro Tool 5.0 application. He also discussed the approaches involved to predict and understand the materials behaviours. At the end the CUI Wah Campus souvenir was presented to the guest speaker with the vote of thanks by the Head, Civil Engineering Department, Dr. Tahir Mehmood.
