AKU don elected to the U.S. National Academy of Medicine 

Karachi, October 21, 2022 (PPI-OT):Prof Dr Marleen Temmerman, Director of the Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health, Aga Khan University, has been elected to the U.S. National Academy of Medicine. ​She was granted the honour for her numerous leadership positions at AKU and global organizations. Prof Marleen is also one of the authors of the UN Global Strategy for Women, Children and Adolescent Health.

Speaking on her election, Prof Marleen said, “I am humbled and honoured to be elected to the U.S. National Academy of Medicine. I am extremely proud to join this esteemed Academy and grateful to many colleagues with whom I am sharing this with. Most of all, I am thankful to the Academy for this recognition of our work in women’s health and rights. It gives meaning and purpose to what we do.”

Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honours in the fields of health and medicine. It recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service and made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, healthcare, and public health.

“This extraordinary class of new members is comprised of exceptional scholars and leaders who have been at the forefront of responding to serious public health challenges, combatting social inequities, and achieving innovative discoveries. Their expertise will be vital to informing the future of health and medicine for the benefit of us all,” said National Academy of Medicine President Victor J. Dzau while welcoming the new members.

Prof Marleen is one of the world’s most exemplary gynaecologists and a “polymath in reproductive health”, as stated by The Lancet. She beat all odds to study medicine at the Ghent University in Belgium and went ahead to become the first female professor of gynaecology in Belgium.

Throughout her diverse portfolio of medical, political, and academic work, Prof Marleen has contributed to improvements in healthcare for disadvantaged populations and for the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and girls. She has also established a worldwide network of universities in the field of reproductive, maternal, new-born, and adolescent health. Prof Marleen continues to be a vocal and ardent champion for the rights of women, children, and adolescents globally.

The reputable professor has earned numerous awards and achievements including a Lifetime Achievement Award by the British Medical Journal, the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear by former Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta, and meritorious gynaecologist from FIGO, the International Federation of Gynaecologists and Midwives.

​Despite her previous achievements, Prof Marleen is focused on continuing to majorly contribute towards the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women. She aspires to continue investing in research and mentoring young African researchers in health, sciences, technologies, and gender, and in knowledge translation to leverage implementation and use of available data to improve health systems and universal health coverage, as well as sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Seminar on Growing Intolerance in Pakistan: Responsibilities of Media and Civil Society 

Islamabad, October 21, 2022 (PPI-OT):Iqbal International Institute for Research and Dialogue in collaboration with the Department of Sociology and Department of Media Studies, IIUI organized a seminar on Growing intolerance in Pakistan: Responsibilities of Media and Civil Society.

The Chief Guest Professor Ahsan Iqbal, Federal Minister for the Planning, Development and Special Initiatives said that the biggest challenge of the country today was to get united and to subside the culture of hate from the society as without eliminating this culture, extremism could not be rooted out.

He said Pakistan had paid huge price of extremism during last few decades, so it was necessary to root out the culture of hate. “The governance must be an inclusive governance, if it is not inclusive and based on hate and discrimination, then we are negating the Ideology of Pakistan”, he added.

Professor Dr Masoom Yasinzai, Rector, International Islamic University Islamabad, said that Pakistan has a great potential to become a developed state. He said its youth can contribute in the prosperity of Pakistan. He added that eradication of intolerance and hatred is possible by promotion of positive thinking approach. He urged media and civil society to play their role in creating awareness about extremism, intolerance and their deadly impacts on societies.

Professor Dr Nabi Bux Jumani, Vice President A and F, IIUI said that tolerance and peace are the fundamental values of society and universities can play their vital role to promote such values in the students through education.

Universities should take initiative to impart content, organize awareness seminars and develop training programs by inviting media persons and influential persons from the civil society to infuse tolerance, peace and social cohesion among university students.

Professor Dr Zafar Iqbal, Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, IIUI was of the view that chiding criticism, abusive language and gimpy blame had become the tag of Pakistani society. Social media is also a teasing tale of our terrible temperament.

People just want to tune in on the statement of their will. They lack the gallantry to listen to something beyond the bounds of a specific religious sect or peculiar political party and that really promotes intolerance in the society.

We need to develop think tanks within our universities and to educate the think tanks of private sectors and support them so that they should be able to produce narratives, knowledge for the future strategies.

Shehzada Zulfiqar, Former President Pakistan Union of Journalists said that the wave of intolerance sweeping across Pakistan was posing a serious threat to the country’s most vital interests. Role of media is quite decisive in these critical conditions.

Media can play a more constructive role for promoting social cohesion in the society by highlighting and debating issues of underdeveloped areas of Pakistan. We need to understand factors of intolerance in Pakistan such as economic disparities, illiteracy, political grievances, and inadequate social services. And intolerance can be reduced if these factors are addressed properly by the state.

Professor Dr Zakria Zakir, Vice Chancellor, University of Poonch, Rawalakot shared his views that unless we do not respect others perceptions on different issues we cannot overcome intolerance as a collective attitude of society followed by its consequences. Dr Qamar Cheema, renowned analyst said that International Islamic University Islamabad always organized programs on issues that were of vital importance for the society.

He opined that It is a need of the hour to promote tolerance in the society. Tolerance is an attitude and it can be flourished by accepting universal human rights and basic freedom of others. A large number of students and faculty members of the Department of Sociology and Department of Media Studies, IIUI attended the seminar.

Grey structure of Jamia Masjid at IHHN, Korangi Campus, completed 

Karachi, October 21, 2022 (PPI-OT):As part of Indus Hospital and Health Network’s (IHHN) Karachi expansion project, a new Jamia Masjid is being constructed at IHHN, Korangi Campus. The grey structure of Jamia Masjid was recently completed marking the end of Phase 1 of the construction project.

The Masjid will consist of two floors comprising spacious prayer halls, gardens, ablution areas, restrooms, a library, a minaret, and rooms for accommodation for the Imam, Muezzin, and Khadim. Its architectural features include marble jail screens, an internal dome, and boticina marble on walls and floors. Upon completion, the Masjid will be able to house 4,200 namazis. Jamia Masjid is planned to be formally open to the public by December 2023, however prayers already commenced on Friday, September 30, 2022 in first phase in the basement area of the Masjid.

Acceptance of online results of intermediate for provisional admissions [BS Programs] 

Islamabad, October 21, 2022 (PPI-OT):All potential candidates who have passed their intermediate examination held in year 2022 and result declared during September – October 2022 from the respective boards are allowed to apply for BS admission by providing an online result card/certificate. Online result cards shall be accepted for provisional admission only.

2. All provisionally admitted students must submit their official intermediate or equivalent result card/ certificate within 15 days of the commencement of classes.

3. Classes for the fall 2022 semester will commence on Tuesday, November 1, 2022. The Deadline for such admitted students to submit their official Intermediate Result cards/Certificates is November 15, 2022.

Note:

In case of the non-provision of official intermediate result cards /certificate at respective Virtual Campus/PVCs, the University may cancel the admissions and will not refund any deposited dues.

Speech competitions on “End of Prophet-hood” enthrall students at SU: Participating in such events to boost buoyancy of contestants, eliminate fear of public speaking 

Jamshoro, October 21, 2022 (PPI-OT):A speech competition in English, Urdu and Sindhi languages titled “End of Prophet-hood and Seerat of Mustafa (peace be upon him)” was organized by Sindh University’s Department of Comparative Religions and Islamic Culture in the Shaikh Ayaz Auditorium, Arts Faculty Building here on Thursday.

Students Anzla got first, Zafian Zaidi second and Anam Imam Bakhsh third position in the Urdu category, while Arif, Syed Noorullah Shah and Abdul Salam in English and Noorul Nabi, Naveed Baghio and Abrar in the Sindhi competition respectively.

In the Urdu category of speech competition, Chairperson Department of Comparative Religion and Islamic Culture Dr. Naheed Arain and Ansab Qureshi participated as judges. A total of 25 students participated in the Urdu competition, out of which shields were given to the top three contestants including Anzla, Zafian Zaidi and Anam Imam Bakhsh for securing 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions.

Similarly, in the Sindhi category, Dr. Muhammad Anas Rajpar participated as the judge, who awarded positions to Arif Ali, Syed Noorullah Shah and Abdul Salam respectively for best speeches. All three competitors were given away the shields.

In the English category, Dr. Sibghatullah Bhutto and GM Abbasi partook as judges, according to their decision, three students Noorul Nabi, Naveed Baghio and Abrar Ahmed were awarded top positions and they were given shields.

After the competitions, Dr. Naheed Arain gave away the shields to all the judges; however, three students Sanaullah, Raheel Keerio and Abdul Ghaffar Bhatti were given certificates of appreciation.

Talking on the occasion, Dr. Naheed Arain said that a good person was one who adopted positive thinking and played a vital role even in the midst of bad people in the society.

“This world is mortal, just as the youths leave the university after studying in any department for 4 years, likewise, everyone has to leave this world one day”, she said and added that if the good deeds were done by a person, he/she will become happy in life and the hereafter.

Addressing the ceremony, Dr. Muhammad Anas Rajpar said that the speech competition was aimed at providing a platform to the students to learn the art of speech and to create confidence in them. “After passing out from the university, they can speak freely wherever they go because taking part in competition will inculcate self-assurance in them. He said that participating in speech competitions will boost buoyancy of the students and eliminate fear of public speaking throughout their lives.

He said that every speech had its own method and technique; the style adopted in the speech competition could not be taken on while standing on the pulpit in a mosque. During the speech competitions, the Shaikh Ayaz Auditorium, Arts Faculty Building was jam-packed from the male and female students.
