Qualification for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 commences with pathway events launching in Europe

Dubai, May 31, 2022 (PPI-OT):The road to the biggest ever ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2024 commences in June with the first qualifying events taking place in Europe.

The road to the biggest ever ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2024 commences in June with the first qualifying events taking place in Europe. These events mark the first step in the qualification process, eventually culminating in a record 20 teams competing at the landmark event in the USA and West Indies in 2024.

Over the next two years, teams from across the globe will battle it out in 15 pathway events, all with an eye on sealing a place on the world stage. 68 nations start their journey at Sub Regional Qualifiers, with 28 teams entering at a later stage once the outcomes of this year’s event in Australia are confirmed and the automatic qualifiers for 2024 are known.

The teams seeking to progress from the first step will be spread across 10 Sub Regional Qualifiers; 16 teams from Africa (two events), eight teams from the Americas (one event), nine teams from Asia (two events), seven teams from EAP (two events) in addition to the 28 teams competing from Europe across their three events.

Speaking on the commencement of the qualification pathway, ICC Head of Events Chris Tetley said “We are delighted to see a record number of teams competing for places at ICC events as the Men’s T20 World Cup pathway begins in Europe. The T20 format continues to drive the growth of the game and over the next two years we will see new teams competing in ICC events for the very first time.

“A very warm welcome to Hungary, Romania and Serbia who are making their debut and thanks to Cricket Belgium and Cricket Finland for playing host to a record number of teams at this stage in qualification. I would like to wish all the competing teams every success as they begin their journey towards the USA and West Indies in 2024.”

Europe will be the first stop on the qualification calendar, as three Sub Regional Qualifiers unfold in the space of five weeks in Belgium and Finland. More teams are vying for qualification in the region than ever before, as 28 teams all begin their journey aiming to progress to the Europe Final in 2023 which is the last step of the qualification stage where the region’s participating nations at the marquee men’s event in 2024 will be determined.

Belgium will be the stage for the first event, where 20 matches will be played at the Ghent Oval and Royal Brussels Cricket Club between 28 June and 4 July in the Sub Regional Europe C Qualifier supported by Dream 11. The host nation will feature alongside Denmark, Hungary and Gibraltar in Group 1, while Spain, Portugal, Malta and Israel compete in Group 2. Semi-finals and finals will subsequently be held, with the victor sealing a place in the Europe Regional Final.

Qualification then moves on to Finland where grounds in Tikkurila and Kerava will host ICC tournament cricket for the very first time with back-to-back Sub Regional Qualifiers, as 20 teams arrive to battle it out for qualification.

The first of the two events, Sub Regional Europe A Qualifier will take place between 12-19 July and be made up of two groups; Group 1 consisting of hosts Finland, Italy, Sweden, Greece and Croatia, whereas Group 2 will feature Romania, Isle of Man, Cyprus, Turkey and Serbia.

The two groups of teams competing in the final Sub Regional Europe B Qualifier between 24-31 July will be Group 1 containing Guernsey, Austria, Luxembourg, Bulgaria and Slovenia, with Group 2 featuring Norway, France, Czech Republic, Estonia and Switzerland. In both events, the two group winners will progress to the Final where the winning nation will earn a spot in the Europe Final in 2023.

These events and more will be streamed via fancode.com in the Indian subcontinent, and on ICC.tv across the rest of the world, bringing the action closer than ever to cricket fans around the globe, and allowing them to enjoy every ball of a hugely competitive qualification process.

Once these events have drawn to a close, the focus will then move to other ICC regions towards the latter stages of 2022, where Vanuatu and Japan will prepare to host their Sub Regional qualifying events for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Qualification Structure

20 teams will be competing at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, with 12 teams qualifying automatically, and eight teams determined through regional qualification pathways.

The 12 automatic qualifiers will be identified from the eight top performing teams (top four teams in each Super 12 group) at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia alongside hosts USA and West Indies, with the remaining teams qualifying based on the next highest ranked teams in the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings as of 14 November 2022.

Eight qualification spots are available through regional qualifier events – two teams from each of Africa, Asia and Europe will qualify for the event, while the Americas and EAP regions will each have one team progress to the World Cup through their Regional Qualifier.

The teams competing in these Regional Finals will be formed based on the outcomes of Sub Regional Qualifiers.

Pakistan aims to carry winning momentum in ODIs

Karachi, May 31, 2022 (PPI-OT):Bismah Maroof-led Pakistan are hoping to carry forward the winning momentum gained in the T20I series as they take on Sri Lanka in the first of the three ICC Women’s Championship ODIs at the Southend Club, Karachi tomorrow (Wednesday).

The Pakistan-Sri Lanka series marks the beginning of the new ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25 cycle which is the qualification pathway for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. Two more teams (Bangladesh and Ireland) have been added to the championship taking the number of participating teams to 10.

This is the first-ever ICC Women’s Championship series to be played in Pakistan. The hosts produced a quality performance last week to sweep the three-match T20I series at the same venue and after two days of intense training and practice session, Pakistan are ready to make an impression in the 50-over format in familiar playing conditions.

Sri Lanka however enjoy an historic edge over their hosts in the ODI format having won as many as 21 out of the 30 matches played between the two sides to date. Pakistan though have won the last three ODI encounters between the two sides, the Bismah-led tourists recorded a 3-0 sweep of the 2018 series played in Dambulla.

The last time the two sides competed in an ODI in Pakistan was in December 2005 with Sri Lanka winning both Asia Cup encounters. This series is the first bilateral ODI series between the two sides in Pakistan.

Pakistan captain Bismah Maroof: “After a dominating performance in the T20Is against Sri Lanka, we are now focused on delivering our best in the ODI series which is a part of the ICC Women’s Championship. I am pleased that two more teams have been added to the championship. This step from the ICC will help promote the women’s game in Bangladesh and Ireland besides providing them direct qualification opportunities.

“Our aim like the rest of the sides would be to earn a direct spot in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. The ODI squad for the series is a good blend of experience and youth. We have a number of experienced batters in Sidra Amin, Nida Dar, Alia Riaz and myself.

“Bowling is our traditional strength, Anam Amin did a great job for us in the T20Is and besides her we have a number of quality spin bowling options. We also have a very capable pace attack led by Fatima Sana and Diana Baig.”

Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu: “The performance in the T20I series was disappointing as we failed to win a match. The ICC Women’s Championship fixtures are vital for all sides so we want to put behind the T20I performances and focus on winning the ODIs. This is a new format and a fresh tournament for us so we will try to execute our plans properly as gaining maximum points is each side’s aim and we will be focusing on the same.

“We have to try and play positive cricket, we have some plans and hopefully we can execute them well in the series. It is important for us to improve as we are at number 10 in the rankings so we need to gain enough points to jump up a spot or two.”

Meanwhile, the three matches will begin at 9:30am with the toss at 9:00am. PTV Sports will broadcast the matches live while the series live stream will be available on the PCB YouTube channel.

Pakistan ODI squad:

Bismah Maroof (captain), Aiman Anwar, Aliya Riaz, Anam Amin, Diana Baig, Fatima Sana, Ghulam Fatima, Gull Feroza, Muneeba Ali Siddiqui (wicketkeeper), Nida Dar, Omaima Sohail, Sadaf Shamas, Sadia Iqbal, Sidra Amin and Sidra Nawaz (wicketkeeper).

Sri Lanka ODI squad:

Chamari Athapaththu (captain), Achini Kulasuriya, Ama Kanchana, Anushka Sanjeewani, Harshitha Samarawickrama, Hansima Karunaratne, Hasini Perera, Inoka Ranaweera, Kavisha Dilhari, Nilakshi de Silva, Oshadhi Ranasinghe, Prasadani Weerakkody, Sachini Nisansala, and Sugandika Kumari.

Series schedule:

1 Jun – First ODI

3 Jun – Second ODI

5 Jun – Third ODI

Hitachi Energy wins order from Deutsche Bahn to deliver one of the most powerful converter stations in the world

The Thyrow converter plant will convert electricity from the public three-phase distribution network to a frequency of 16.7 Hz and feed it into the traction current network

Zurich, Switzerland, May 31, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Hitachi Energy, the global technology and market leader in power grids, announced today that it has won an order from Deutsche Bahn to provide a 120 megawatt (MW) converter station which enables DB Energie to secure power supply for the Greater Berlin rail network. The network serves a metropolitan population of around 3.5 million people and is the hub for multiple high-speed train services to cities throughout Germany and neighboring countries.

The Thyrow converter station, south of Berlin, will enable Deutsche Bahn to convert electricity from the public three-phase power distribution grid, which operates at a frequency of 50 hertz (Hz) to 16.7 Hz, and feed it into the rail power grid used to power trains and rail infrastructure.

The order follows one awarded last year by Deutsche Bahn to Hitachi Energy for the 160 MW Delitz converter station in the greater Halle/Leipzig area, which will be one of the most powerful converter stations for rail power worldwide.

“We are delighted that Deutsche Bahn has selected Hitachi Energy as partner of choice to secure the 16.7 Hz power supply for their rail network,” said Niklas Persson, Managing Director of Hitachi Energy’s Grid Integration business. “This is an excellent example of how we collaborate together with customers and partners to accelerate the energy transition and advancing a sustainable energy future for all.”

The Hitachi Energy solution for the Thyrow converter station comprises three compact 40 MW static frequency converter modules, which use Hitachi Energy’s advanced power semiconductors to provide a steady and reliable power supply at maximum availability and with minimal electrical losses. The solution includes a 30-year service contract and a digitalization package to provide Deutsche Bahn with condition-based and reactive maintenance and data insights into the system status of the converter station over the life cycle.

Hitachi Energy is the world’s leading supplier of grid integration and power quality solutions, including rail converter stations and the integration of renewable energy into power transmission systems.

Notes to the Editor

Static frequency converters

Rail frequency converter stations are based on static frequency converters (SFC). They connect three-phase power distribution or transmission grids, which typically operate at 50 or 60 Hz, with single-phase railway power grids, which operate at 16.7, 25, 50 or 60 Hz. Besides the transfer of active power, the SFC can also control reactive power in both grids independently. It responds immediately to grid faults and enables a smooth and interruption-free transition to island mode during an outage.

Power electronics

SFCs are based on Hitachi Energy’s power electronics. These integrated gate-commutated thyristors (IGCTs) will be part of this solution. They maintain grid stability and power quality by responding rapidly to frequency fluctuations and grid disturbances. Power electronics are an integral part of many Hitachi Energy technologies, including high-voltage direct current (HVDC) and flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS).
