BRIDGETOWN: The West Indies cricket team has named two promising newcomers in its squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against Australia, set to commence on July 20. The announcement follows the conclusion of the Test series, which saw Australia secure a 3-0 victory.
The squad includes Jewel Andrew and Jediah Blades, both of whom are set to make their T20I debuts. Andrew, an 18-year-old batting prospect and wicketkeeper, has been recognized for his adeptness against spin bowling. Blades, a left-arm seamer, has already made his mark in ODI cricket and is expected to bolster the team’s powerplay bowling in the T20 format.
Veteran player Shai Hope will continue to captain the side, which features seasoned players like Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, and Rovman Powell. Andre Russell, who is poised to retire from international cricket, is set to participate in the first two matches of the series.
Darren Sammy, the head coach, underscored the importance of the series as a preparatory step for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka next year. Sammy stressed the team’s focus on building momentum and refining their strategy ahead of the global tournament.
“Our goals and strategic plans are aligned to winning the T20 World Cup in 2026,” Sammy stated. He acknowledged past challenges but expressed optimism about the team’s prospects against Australia, citing the squad’s dynamic potential.
