Kingston: Andre Russell, the renowned Jamaican all-rounder and two-time ICC Men’s T20 World Cup champion, has announced his retirement from international cricket. Russell will bid farewell during the upcoming T20I series against Australia, with matches scheduled at his home ground, Sabina Park, on July 20 and 22.
Russell, who was included in the 16-member West Indies squad for the series, expressed gratitude for his international career and the pride he felt representing the West Indies for over a decade. Missing out on the squad against England last year due to injury, Russell now looks forward to concluding his career in front of a home crowd.
In a statement to Cricket West Indies, Russell shared, “Words cannot explain what it meant. To represent the West Indies has been one of the proudest achievements in my life.” He reflected on his journey, emphasizing the inspiration he found in the sport and his desire to leave a lasting impact.
Russell’s career, primarily focused on T20 cricket since 2019, boasts 61 wickets and 1,078 runs over 84 matches. Known for his contributions to domestic T20 leagues, Russell has played a pivotal role in securing multiple championships for his teams.
Darren Sammy, former teammate and now West Indies coach, praised Russell’s professionalism and competitive spirit. “Andre has always been the consummate professional and a fierce competitor. Whether I was captaining him or now coaching him, his hunger to perform and win for West Indies has never wavered,” Sammy remarked.
Russell’s retirement marks the end of an era for West Indies cricket, with hopes that his legacy will continue to inspire future Caribbean cricketers.
