UOL Relief’s training programme spurs education in remote areas of Gilgit-Baltistan

Lahore, April 07, 2023 (PPI-OT): Change begins with education, and every child deserves to go to school. But what is a school without good teachers? It’s the same as a body without a soul. For this purpose, UOL Relief has been advocating the need for quality teaching facility for several years. Apart from focusing on the infrastructure of schools and sponsoring students, the organisation has been holding training programmes for teachers. UOL Relief set a benchmark for the education system in the remote areas of Pakistan by pioneering the “Residential Teachers Training Programme 2023”. So, extensive training was conducted for the teachers from different areas of Gilgit-Baltistan on various pedagogical and advanced teaching skills under this programme for the future of hundreds of children living in the mountains.

With an aim of promoting education at all levels and in all places across Pakistan, the 30 teachers of primary, secondary, and higher secondary levels from five regions of northern Pakistan were warmly welcomed by the UOL Relief. The first of its kind training for three weeks is fully sponsored by UOL Relief and was conducted by professional teacher trainers, under the supervision of Ms Farah Mahmood (Director, UOL Relief) and Mr Nasir Mahmood (Patron-in-Chief, UOL Relief). During the training, the program equipped the teachers with skills and techniques that will help in inspiring students and promoting education in their respective areas. The participants were also taught basic life skills related to safety, rescue, and first aid. In collaboration with Cornerstone School and other professionals, UOL Relief arranged various workshops and lectures that focused on curriculum, teaching methodologies, grooming, and development.

As part of the training, the primary teachers had an interactive session where they learned about innovative methods of story-telling, and computer lessons were also provided by the experts. The programme also catered to their emotional wellbeing, therefore recreational activities such as site visits to the Army Museum and Wahga Border, market visits, and sports activities including cricket and football were also arranged. The three-week ‘Residential Teachers Training Programme 2023’ by UOL Relief concluded with a ceremony at the University of Lahore (UOL). The closing ceremony was attended by Mr Mahmood, Mrs Mahmood, the Head of Cornerstone, and other university officials. Moreover, students from Gilgit-Baltistan also attended the event to show solidarity with the teachers in their region.

The 30 participants included six teachers from Govt. Middle School Raikot Tattu, six from Govt. Boys Higher Secondary School Doghani, seven teachers from Govt. Middle School Hushe, one from Govt. SAP School Hushe, four teachers from Govt. High School Kande, and three from Govt. Primary School Nakhtar Kotkay, Shangla. Renowned trainers from the Education Department, Psychology Department, IMMB, and Cornerstones School System participated in this programme.

The session ended with an elaborate closing ceremony, during which appreciation certificates were distributed to all the stakeholders of the programme, including trainees, trainers, managers, and volunteers. The occasion also provided a platform for the students and participants of Gilgit-Baltistan to showcase their culture.
