Lahore, March 18, 2022 (PPI-OT): The University of Central Punjab has won the All Pakistan Inter-University Table Tennis Championship (Women) 2021-22 organised by Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University, Nawabshah, under the supervision of the Higher Education Commission, Pakistan.

 

16 Universities from all across Pakistan participated in the competition, with the University of Central Punjab and Punjab University making it to the finals. UCP won straight 3-0 and was declared champion. The Vice-Chancellor Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University Nawabshah was the chief guest of the closing ceremony who distributed cash prizes, medals, and trophies among the winners. MoU between UCP and Jinnah Hospital

Lahore, March 17, 2022 (PPI-OT): An MoU between UCP and Jinnah Hospital was signed on March 03, 2022, formalizing various avenues of collaboration. Dr. Nassar Ikram, Pro-Rector UCP, and Prof. Dr. Tahir Rashid, MS Jinnah Hospital graced the event. The collaboration emerged as a realization to collectively address the translational challenges and to address the societal issues by both institutions.

 

UCP houses a dedicated Faculty of Life Sciences encompassing various research domains of Bio-Technology, Bio-Chemistry, Micro-Biology, and Food Sciences. To keep its students abreast of the emerging technologies and the real-world challenges, it has become imperative to join hands with the practitioners across the country.

 

Additionally, the students, researchers, and state-of-the-art research labs at UCP can provide services to the practicing organizations in developing cutting-edge technologies and products. Involvement of the students in case studies and various other activities including the volunteer work by Jinnah Hospital will be further conducive towards their professional development. UCP is hopeful that the collaboration will soon converge towards fruition and will be extremely beneficial for the students and staff members alike.

Department of Politics and IR’s Four-Day Educational Trip to Islamabad 

Lahore, March 12, 2022 (PPI-OT):

Preamble

Under the direction and guidance of honourable Pro-Rector, Dr. Nassar Ikram, Department of Politics and International Relations organized a four-day educational trip to Islamabad from February 28th to March 03, 2022. During the trip, the UCP delegation paid visit to Parliament (National Assembly and Senate), Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Islamabad Policy Research Institute (IPRI), Institute of Security and Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI), Centre for International Strategic Studies (CISS), Institute of Regional Studies (IRS), Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE), National Institute of Pakistan Studies (NIPS), and School of Politics and International Relations, Quaid-e-Azam University.

During the visit, UCP delegation explored multiple opportunities of institutional linkages, collaborative research projects, students and faculty exchange programs, Internships and jobs placement, joint conferences, seminars, webinars, and training workshops.

Day 1

UCP delegation paid a brief visit to National Assembly where they were briefed about the history, constitutional and political developments, procedures and functions of both houses in terms of law-making and their powers.

Day 2

On day two, UCP delegation was scheduled to visit Institute of Regional Studies (IRS). The delegation was fortunate to participate in an ongoing session at IRS on the pressing Kashmir issue and Peace in South Asia. The keynote speaker of the Seminar was the well-acclaimed historian and renowned scholar Professor Dr. Victoria Schofield. Key highlight of the session was the active participation of UCP’s students and faculty. Later on, faculty members had a meeting with the President and officials of IRS for the future cooperation between the two institutions. Topics of the discussion included Internship and job-placement of students, and joint research projects. Both agreed to ink the Memorandum of Understandings (MOUs) in this regard.

In the second half of the day, UCP delegation went to the School of Politics and International Relations, and Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (P.I.D.E), Quaid-e-Azam University. At both avenues students were sensitized with the ongoing programs of the institutions. Visiting UCP faculty also explored the possibilities of joint research projects, conferences, seminars as well as faculty development and exchange programs.

Day 3

On day three, UCP delegation visited Islamabad Policy Research Institute (IPRI), Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI), and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. At IPRI, UCP delegation was given a brief snapshot of the historical timeline, current research projects, publications, research journals, and their input in policy making of Pakistan. This presentation was followed by an interactive and robust session with the former Ambassador, Asif Durrani who enlightened the students with the skillset they need to pursue their career goals. Dr. Waheed Ahmed Khan had a word with the Acting Head, Editor and senior research fellows and explored the likely options in terms of institutional cooperation.

At ISSI, UCP contingent was warmly welcomed by the Director Admin Dr. Talat and his team who arranged the seminar on Sino-Pak and Pak-Afghan relations and the changing dynamics of global politics. Students actively participated in the seminar. Director Admin ISSI himself suggested signing of an MOU with Department of Politics and International Relations, UCP, which was warmly welcomed by Dr. Waheed Ahmed Khan.

In the later part of the day, UCP delegation was received with great honour by the protocol officer and team of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). A comprehensive presentation was given by the MOFA officials on the functions and operationalization of Pakistani foreign missions. It was followed by the interactive Q and A session led by the Director General of Strategic Communication Division, MOFA. Students were very motivated to join diplomatic frontline of Pakistan and enquired about the possibilities of joining foreign service.

Day 4

The UCP delegation visited the Centre for International Security Studies (CISS). Dr. Waheed Ahmed Khan had a candid and useful interaction with Ambassador (R) Iftikhar-ud-din Hassan, Editor CISS journal ‘Insight’. CISS representative briefed the delegation about the mission of his research center, which focuses on nuclear issues of Pakistan. He also encouraged the students and faculty members to get engaged in research on non-conventional parts of national security. Dr. Waheed Ahmed Khan showed his expression of interest in establishing institutional collaboration and linkages. CISS representative responded the query very positively and asked the delegation to send official correspondence in this regard.

Webinar on National Security Policy of Pakistan (2022-2026) 

Lahore, March 05, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Department of Politics and International Relations has organized a webinar on the National Security Policy (NSP) of Pakistan (2022-2026) on Friday, 18 February. The well-read and well-acclaimed academician and author Dr Huma Baqai, Former Defense Secretary and security expert, Lt Gen (R) Dr. Talat Masood and former Foreign Secretary and top-notch diplomat Shamshad Ahmed Khan were part of the distinguished panel.

Dr. Waheed Ahmad Khan, Head of Department (Politics and International Relations-FASS) welcomed the respected speakers and gave a brief introduction about the general outlook of the department, faculty, students and on-going programs. Dr. Huma Buqai shed light on the academic thrust of the NSP and alluded how toxic and Pakistan specific Indians have been, following the disruption. According to her, NSP has provided unified, people-centric and inclusive approach to tackle the challenges. She said that Pakistan needs to avoid camp politics and need to revise this security policy periodically.

Former Foreign Secretary, Shamshad Khan made his point by saying ‘’Problems are not external but domestic”. His focus has been on geo-economics. Lt General (R) Dr. Talat Masood zoomed in on economic dimension of this security policy. At the end, Students in the conference room posed relevant questions which were answered in a satisfactory manner. Department HOD and faculty thanked the panellists for enlightening the students and taking stock of the security policy in a succinct way.

International Childhood Cancer Day 

Lahore, March 03, 2022 (PPI-OT):UCP in collaboration with Punjab Food Authority (PFA) and Shaukat Khanam Memorial Cancer Hospital (SKMCH) celebrated International Childhood Cancer Day on February 23, 2022. The event entailed a blood donation camp, cancer awareness walk across campus, and a seminar that encompassed talks on various related topics. Dr. Nassar Ikram, Pro-Rector UCP, and Mr. Rafaqat Ali Nissoana, the Director-General PFA led the event and also signed MoU to further strengthen efforts of both organizations in curtailing the ratio of cancer across the country. Others amongst the esteemed guests were the Provost UCP, Dr. Faisal Mustafa, Dean FLS, Dr. Javed Iqbal, Director Community Development SKMCH Ms. Naila Khan, Community Nutritionist, Ms. Shifa Amna Ali, and Pediatric Oncologist Dr. Syed Shazif Baqri.

The event was spurred by a need for social responsibility and the efforts of the Faculty of Life Sciences following their initial collaborations with PFA in the form of faculty and student exchange. With the rise in the spread of cancer among children getting ubiquitous, Pakistan is striving to reduce the spread of this fatal disease along with improving the survival rates.

To take pragmatic steps, UCP adopted a triple-helix approach (Academia, Government, and Healthcare Departments) by joining hands with PFA and Shaukat Khanam to participate in this noble cause. With the new formalized engagements, UCP has further accelerated the activities in tackling the dearth of healthcare facilities and awareness in the country. These initiatives will surely help Pakistan in improving its overall healthcare condition.

MoU between UCP and PSRD-CRS 

Lahore, March 02, 2022 (PPI-OT):University of Central Punjab (UCP) houses many research labs focusing on developing cutting-edge technologies in diverse knowledge areas. Aimed at conducting applied research, these labs are producing solutions that are beneficial to society at large. Founded on this aim, Pakistan’s first rehabilitation R and D center is operational at UCP helping people with physical disabilities to attain functional independence and lead them toward a normal way of life by reducing the impact of these impairments.

BioMechatronics lab working under the ambit of the National Center of Robotics and Automation (NCRA) at UCP has been joining hands with other organizations to enhance the portfolio of indigenously developed products and even focusing on bespoke projects. In continuation of that, UCP and PRSD College of Rehabilitation Sciences (PSRD-CRS) penned an MoU on February 17, 2022, and will be working closely in future work on the theme “technology killing the disabilities”. The MoU entails conducting multiple collaborative projects and bringing along more opportunities for students providing them exposure to the projects in this area.

Dr. Zohaib Aftab who is heading the BioMechatronics lab at UCP has played an instrumental role in making this collaboration with PSRD. We are sure that through these initiatives, UCP will keep playing its role in supporting differently abled people.
