Practical Learning Session: The Year of Change: Challenges for First Year Students in University 

Rawalpindi, March 25, 2022 (PPI-OT):NUMS Department of Public Health (NDPH) conducted a Practical Learning Session with the theme: “The Year of Change: Challenges for First Year Students in University” on Friday, March 4th, 2022, at NUMS PWD campus. The purpose of the activity was to serve as an ice breaking session and to inform new students regarding challenges of university life and different coping strategies.

The session was organized by the students of Batch I and attended by all the students and faculty of Department of Public Health including the Head of Department Professor Dr Uzma Hassan, Associate Professor Dr Tamkeen Jaffry, Assistant Professor Dr Hina Shan, Senior Lecturer Dr Rehma Gilani and Assistant Manager Ms. Rubab Zulfiqar.

The session was moderated by Ms Fatimah Shahrukh and Ms Iffa Zahid. They introduced life at the university campus as a place to learn, explore and develop oneself holistically. They emphasized that the experiences students gain in their first year of university, help them in shaping their successes in the years ahead. Students, Mr Ahsan Khalil of Batch I, Mr Waleed Qaseer, Ms Fatima Saleem and Ms Sofia Rajput of Batch II, and Ms Hamda of Batch III, shared their personal experiences.

Presentation on Common Challenges Faced by Students and their Solutions by Ms Rimsha Azhar and Stress Management by Ms Noor Ul Ain Shah highlighted challenges faced by students and importance of friendship, meditations, discipline, budgeting and coping mechanism. Pamphlets and posters, prepared by Ms Fizza Javed and Ms Shiza Aftab of Batch I, were also displayed. The session also included fun games including Chinese Whisper, Would You Rather and Karaoke. In the Q and A session, students were given an opportunity to ask questions.

Their concern were mostly related to public health career pathway, field trips, timing and holidays. In her closing remarks, HoD Prof Dr Uzma Hassan reassured that wellbeing of students is priority of university and their genuine concerns will be address. She acknowledged and appreciated organizing committee on their hard work and team efforts especially, Senior Lecturer Dr Rehma Gilani who arranged and supervised the session. She reemphasized the importance of first year in the university and shared her personal experience at Army Medical College.

She said that this is the time where one is transitioning from a college student to a responsible adult, trying out different clubs and organizations, attending social events, and beginning to get to know batch-mates and instructors. This will lay a foundation that will be crucial for growth in these formative university years. The moderators thanked the students and faculty for attending the activity and ended with a group photograph of three batches with the HOD and the faculty of the Department of Public Health.

NUMS Representation at First Ever Career Counselling Fest 2022 held by Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training 

Rawalpindi, March 25, 2022 (PPI-OT):Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training organized a three-day event for career counselling of students. The event was conducted at Pak-China Friendship Center in collaboration with more than 80 organizations. The career fest was formally inaugurated by President Arif Alvi who appreciated the initiative by MFE and PT. Dr. Wasim Sajjad from Department of Biological sciences (Microbiology) was invited as a guest speaker to introduce various heath and biological sciences related domains other than MBBS and BDS.

Dr Sajjad apprised the audience about the opportunities in Bio-entrepreneurship, indigenization of bio-based products and technology transfer to contribute the country economic growth. He also emphasized the vital role of parents in in guiding their children towards career paths in science and research. He informed the students that there are many career opportunities in R and D, academia and industrial sector but unfortunately we are still lagging in training skilled researchers in Basic and Translational Sciences.

Additional Secretary Mr. Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani (MFEPT) presented a shield to Dr. Wasim Sajjad and appreciated his talk. Moreover, volunteers from the Department of Biological sciences, including Moeeza Ahmad, Hawaid Ahmed and Syeda Faiza Arshad facilitated the NUMS career Fest Stall at Expo. Students from different schools and colleges participated in the event to make an informed choice about their future career path. The NUMS team provided guidance and information and future opportunities in the field of Microbiology, Biotechnology, Human Genetics, Phytochemistry, Bioinformatics and Nanomedicine.

Faculty from the Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Dr Amjad Sohail and Mr. Umer Fayyaz also participated to shed light on future career prospects in Social Science for bridging the gap at community level. To sum up, initiative taken by federal ministry was highly appreciated by all and it was an opportunity for undergraduate students from NUMS to volunteer for directing potential undergraduate students towards better future and better career.

NUMS-Department of public health-orientation session for BSPH-third batch; session 2022-2026

Rawalpindi, March 07, 2022 (PPI-OT):NUMS Department of Public Health (NDPH) arranged orientation session for Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) program to welcome third batch of students, on February 21st, 2022. This year, an overwhelming response was observed for the program, which is evidence of our faculty hard work, commitment and dedication.

With this program, we aim to create a health workforce, capable to generate health awareness and health promotion among the community by adopting an innovative and community- based learning approach.

The session was organized to provide a brief introduction of the University and the Department of Public Health. The session was attended by the students, external faculty members of concerned courses and the faculty members of Department of Public Health including Head of Department Professor Dr Uzma Hassan, Associate Professor Dr Tamkeen Jaffry, Assistant Professor Dr Hina Shan, Senior Lecturer Dr Rehma Gilani and Assistant Manager Ms Rubab Zulfiqar.

Dr Hina Shan moderated the session by introducing the students with the mission of NUMS followed by a welcome note from Professor Dr. Uzma Hassan. She congratulated the students on their selection, highlighted the tremendous progress NUMS has made during the past five years and reiterated NUMS pledge to follows the spirit of scientific inquiry with the best of education and skill base training.

She echoed the important role public health plays in the development of a strong and resilient health system and underscored the role of faculty in imparting quality education and wished them, a promising career in public health research and development.

The faculty gave their brief introduction. Dr.Tamkeen Jaffry, briefed the students regarding academic and assessment policy of the program. Dr Rehma Gilani gave an outline of prospective research activities at the department. Mr Wajid, NUMS librarian, gave a presentation related to rules of using library and issue of books.

The students introduced themselves to the faculty members and to each other, briefly highlighting their interests in public health and reasons of joining NUMS. Students were provided the opportunity to ask questions from the HoD and faculty related to program and career perspective

A training session on the Learning Management System at Moodle was conducted by Ms. Aqsa Arshad, Directorate of Digital Technologies. The Chair concluded the session with a note of thanks to the students, faculty members and the concerned staff. The students were provided refreshments followed by a tour of academic block by the senior batch BSPH focal persons. The academic session has been formally commenced from February 21st, 2022.

Green Youth Movement Initiation Ceremony 

Rawalpindi, January 17, 2022 (PPI-OT):Under the umbrella of Kamyab Jawan Programme, Green Youth Movement (GYM) Club was established as an HEC-led directive as a step to fulfil the Prime Minister’s vision of clean and green Pakistan entrusted to Ministry of Climate Change. The main goal of GYM club is to engage the youth in schools, colleges, and universities to promote eco-friendly culture across the country. Environment Committee and GYM Club through their initiatives, are contributing directly towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 2, 12, 13, 14, 15).

NUMS-Environment committee organized the pledge ceremony for Green Youth Movement on December 14, 2021, to increase awareness of environment sustainability among youth. The event was attended by the honourable Pro-Vice Chancellor NUMS Major General Syed Ammar Raza, Dean Multidisciplinary Sciences Dr. Aisha Mohyuddin, Heads of NUMS departments, Directors, faculty members and staff.

The event opened with the national anthem of Pakistan followed by recitation of Holy Quran by Amina Mehmood (student, DBS). The moderators of the event Momina and Haseeb (students, DSBS and DBS) welcomed the guests to the event. Dr. Adeela Bashir, Assistant Professor NDHPE, presented the concept of Zero Waste. She elaborated the objectives of the Environment Committee and the milestones achieved by the NUMS team.

Dr. Mahwish Ali, NUMS Environmental Scientist, gave a briefing to describe the concept and purpose of Green Youth Movement. Mr. Umer Fayyaz, lecturer NDSBS, then took the pledge from members of GYM club. Pro-Vice Chancellor NUMS Major General Syed Ammar Raza distributed certificates of appreciation to admin staff in recognition of their efforts and gave his concluding remarks on the idea of clean and green Pakistan. The session was concluded with a note of thanks by Dr. Ayesha Rauf, Head of Environment Committee.

The Pledge ceremony was followed by a bake-sale by students of all NUMS departments. Stalls were also set up to display eco-friendly alternatives for awareness and sale. The respectable Vice Chancellor NUMS, Lt. General Syed Muhammad Imran Majeed, Pro VC Major General Ammar and all the guests visited the stalls. Proceeds from the sale would be used for eco-friendly initiatives at NUMS.

The event also raised awareness regarding the two important R’s: Reuse and Reduce, by reusing banners and flyers in the event. Moreover, no disposable items were used in the event to reduce the waste, rather proper crockery was used, and the guests were encouraged to wash their own utensils.

Deadly Dengue: Spread Awareness and Stop the Transmission 

Rawalpindi, December 07, 2021 (PPI-OT):The NUMS Department of Public Health conducted the “Dengue Awareness Seminar”- a part of the “Dengue awareness Campaign” with a theme “Deadly Dengue: Spread Awareness and Stop the Transmission”, held at National University of Medical Sciences, PWD campus on Tuesday, 30 November 2021 at 1030 Hrs.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease found worldwide in tropical and subtropical climates. It is a leading cause of serious illness and death in many countries with Pakistan being one of such countries where sudden rise in cases occur annually. Pakistan is battling one of the worst dengue outbreaks this year. With the precarious nature of the situation, immediate attention is required to limit the spread.

Engaging with all the stakeholders to improve participation and mobilization helps in sustained community involvement in effective and substantial vector control. Community empowerment is a key aspect of the strategy as it allows the local population to drive eradication of the disease in their environment especially involving and educating younger people so that they are better prepared in spreading the knowledge to fight the menace of dengue.

The NUMS Dengue Awareness Campaign was organized with a focus to identify all the causes and risk factors as well as the possible protective and preventive measures to avoid contracting Dengue. The Dengue Awareness Seminar involved all the students at the University with active participation from both faculties of Multidisciplinary Sciences (MDS) and Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH).

The NUMS Department of Public Health installed banners and standees about Dengue prevention within the University Premises along with flyer distribution in various localities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad encouraging individuals to initiate and continue their efforts to keep their surroundings dengue-free. The highlights of the event were Power point presentation, role play, poetry, poster exhibition, video screening and walk to bring the issue of Dengue in the limelight which globally remains a Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD).

NUMS Pro Vice Chancellor Academics, Maj Gen Saleem Ahmad Khan, HI (M) graced the occasion by his presence and distributed shields among the winner students of the inter-departmental competition and the organizers of the seminar. He appreciated the great potential and talent of students exhibited during the event, he also acknowledged the efforts and dedication of the members of Department of Public Health in organizing the Seminar.

NUMS Vice Chancellor, Lt Gen Syed Muhammad Imran Majeed, HI (M) gave honour by joining the Poster exhibition and walk for the cause. He admired the students for their active participation and congratulated the Public Health team on the successful Awareness Campaign. The Head of the Department Public Health Prof. Dr. Uzma Hassan stressed on the need to contain the disease through control of vector-aedes mosquito with effective community mobilization.

The HoD acknowledged and appreciated her team of Department of Public Health; Dr. Tamkeen Jaffry, Dr. Hina Shan, Dr Rehma Gilani, Ms. Rubab Zulfiqar on their hard work and commendable job. Prof. Dr. Uzma Hassan congratulated the winners of the competition and thanked the students for their enthusiastic contribution. She expressed her gratitude to all the honourable guests for taking out the time to attend the seminar.
