Institution of Civil Engineers Secured 2nd Position in Pakistan Water Week 2022 

Swabi, November 01, 2022 (PPI-OT):Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR), in collaboration with International Water Management Institute (IWMI) Pakistan and other partners had organized Pakistan Water Week 2022, from 24th to 28th October 2022. The aim of water week was sharing knowledge with the stakeholders, particularly mainstreaming youth by providing them an opportunity to share their knowledge and visions for a water secure future. The theme for this year’s water week was “Role of Water-Food-Energy and Ecosystem Nexus for a Climate Resilient Pakistan”.

A series of events were organized to achieve the intended objectives of Pakistan Water Week 2022. A three-day international conference was organized from 24th to 26th October, 2022 in Serena Hotel Islamabad. Federal Minister for Planning Development and Special Initiatives, Professor Dr. Ahsan Iqbal inaugurated the International Conference. A number of eminent national and international experts focused on a range of water challenges and required measures under the influence of climate change.

The international conference was followed by the two-day national workshop organized at PCRWR, Islamabad on 27th -28th October, 2022. The workshop comprised of ice breaker activities and energizers such as industrial exhibition, students’ competitions (debate, poster, essay writing, student board games, student final year projects, documentaries, urban sculpture and Art), and mass awareness campaign etc. Technology show-casing exhibition was inaugurated by the Federal Minister for Water Resources, Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah. The inaugural session was followed by a media interaction session focused on “Optimal strategies for water conservation and sustainable water resource management”.

Students’ competitions were held on 27th -28th October, 2022. At the end of the day a closing ceremony of the event was organized to award the winners of the student competitions. Mr. Haile Gashaw, Chief WASH UNICEF Pakistan, Dr. Yousaf Filali-Meknassi, Country Director UNESCO and Dr. Rachael McDonnell, Deputy Director General IWMI embraced the closing ceremony and appreciated the initiative of Pakistan Water Week 2022 to address water issues in the country and emphasized the need of these events time to time for community and youth awareness. This will contribute towards the sustainability of water and food sectors in the country. The winners of the competitions were awarded with cash prizes, certificates and shields during the closing ceremony.

ICE GIK Student Chapter under the Student Affairs Department had participated in the student competition of short documentary under the theme of: Climate Change and its impact on agriculture and water and secured 2nd place in almost 39 entries from all over Pakistan. The title of the documentary was Climate Change: The water paradigm in Pakistan.

Women Engineering Society – Sanitary Kits Package Campaign for Flood Affected Areas

Swabi, October 31, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Women Engineering Society (WES) under the Student Affairs Department organized a flood relief campaign program in October 2022 for the female in the flood affected areas of Baluchistan, Southern Punjab, and KPK, in collaboration with Mahwari Justice (Menstruation Relief Campaign). “Mahwari Justice is a menstruation relief campaign for flood victims initiated by two students, Bushra Mahnoor and Anum Khalid, who are reaching out and providing young female flood victims with menstrual hygiene kits.

Each kit contains a pack of sanitary napkins, either bought or made by themselves, a bar of soap and underwear”. WES previously initiated a campaign to collect monetary funds for the people of the flood affected areas. In the latter phase, volunteers from all batches of GIK Institute packed sanitary kits for flood struck communities. The Women Engineering Society was successful in packaging around 700 kits in just one day with 30 volunteers from student body.

Plantation Drive by Student Affairs Department

Swabi, October 28, 2022 (PPI-OT):A plantation drive was organized by the Student Affairs Department on Friday 21 October 2022 at GIK Institute. Character Building Society, Project Topi and Horticulture Department assisted in the plantation drive. Rector GIK Institute Prof. Dr Fazal Ahmed Khalid (SI) inaugurated the plantation drive. Students, faculty members and staff members actively participated in the plantation drive. It was a step taken in the fall 2022 semester towards the Clean and Green Pakistan.

Later a session regarding green and clean campaign was delivered to the students, faculty members and staff members on the site of the plantation drive. Trees provide clean atmosphere to all the living beings, and it helps in the purification of the Oxygen. It also helps in overcoming the heated temperature and it also helps in reducing the floods. The participants were motivated to help in extending the plantation drive in their hometown.

“World Food Day” A Public Service Message from Student Affairs Department 

Swabi, October 18, 2022 (PPI-OT):World Food Day is observed annually on 16 October to highlight the millions of people worldwide who cannot afford a healthy diet and the need for regular access to nutritious food. We need to build a sustainable world where everyone, everywhere has regular access to enough nutritious food.

Many of us have a very bad habit of food waste. Buying more food than we need, letting fruits and vegetables spoil at home or taking larger portions than we can eat.

Let this be an opportunity to advise you all that “Do Not Waste food. Let this be a day and onwards to also spread the word ‘Not to Waste Food”. Let’s be a responsible person.

Dr. Muhammad Zahir Iqbal is once again listed among the world’s Top 2% of scientists and researchers in the field of Energy 

Swabi, October 18, 2022 (PPI-OT):Dr. Muhammad Zahir Iqbal is once again listed among the world’s Top 2% of scientists and researchers in the field of Energy.

He was listed in the top 2% of scientists Stanford University-Elsevier in 2021 as well.

He is the recipient of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences (PAS) Gold Medal, 2020 and Winner of the HEC Best Paper Award, 2017.

He won the prestigious GIKI Annual Research Award from 2016 – 2019. Furthermore, he has been awarded various research grants such as NRPU-HEC, LCF-HEC, PSF-NSFC, etc.
