Islamabad: The Shari’ah Academy at the International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) recently organized a two-day training program titled “Resolution of Family Issues in the Light of Shari’ah.” Held on July 26-27, 2025, the event, conducted both on-campus and online, aimed to raise awareness about Shari’ah-based methods for resolving family disputes and promote an understanding of Islamic family laws.
The sessions addressed various contemporary family-related issues, including marriage, divorce, inheritance, child custody, second marriage, khula, and the waiting period. Scholars and legal experts provided insights into practical and jurisprudential aspects of each topic.
The event commenced with an opening session led by the Director General of the Shari’ah Academy, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Akram, and Dr. Shams-ul-Haq. They discussed the foundations of the Islamic family system and its relevance amid modern challenges such as materialism and individualism. An open discussion followed, covering societal values and media influences on family dynamics.
Dr. Shams-ul-Haq delivered a talk on the need for reform in cultural practices, addressing un-Islamic customs like dowry and social extravagance. Dr. Shehzad Iqbal Shami outlined Islamic rulings concerning marriage and divorce. Dr. Habib-ur-Rehman concluded the first day by discussing the characteristics of an ideal family in Islam.
On the second day, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Akram emphasized principles of harmony and cooperation in his session titled “How to Make Our Homes a Model of Paradise.” Hafiz Ahmad Waqas clarified inheritance-related issues, focusing on Shari’ah-based distribution methods and addressing misconceptions about women’s inheritance rights.
The final session featured Dr. Saqib Jawad, who elaborated on child custody and related rights, exploring legal and Islamic perspectives on the care and education of children.
The training program was attended by approximately thirty participants from various backgrounds. Attendees expressed appreciation for the initiative and called for more such programs to enhance public understanding of Islamic family jurisprudence. Certificates were distributed at the conclusion of the course.
