Karachi, The Centre for South Asian Studies (CSAS) at the University of the Punjab in Lahore hosted a thought-provoking seminar titled Thinking Beyond Democracy & Freedom in the Age of Glocalization on December 20, 2023. The event featured Dr. Rana Eijaz Ahmed, a distinguished Professor of Political Science from the university, as the guest speaker.
According to University of The Punjab, Dr. Eijaz delved into the complex relationship between democracy, freedom, and the evolving concept of glocalization – the integration of global and local perspectives. He discussed the dichotomy within societies that necessitates space for diverse viewpoints and emphasized the importance of mutual respect for each other’s existence beyond specific labels or identities.
The seminar highlighted Dr. Eijaz’s insights on human freedom, pointing out that while humans are born free, societal specifications have often led to intolerance. He argued that tolerance is a fundamental component of democracy, underscoring that democracy should be seen as a means to achieving broader goals rather than an end in itself.
Dr. Eijaz also touched upon the paradoxical nature of freedom, stating that true freedom can only be observed within certain impositions, which, in turn, contradict the very essence of freedom.
The event was well-attended by faculty members from different departments and students from various undergraduate and postgraduate disciplines, reflecting the university’s commitment to fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and understanding on critical global issues.
