Reported Crimes in Pakistan Surge by 34.3% Over Past Decade, Reveals Study

Islamabad, 16 Oct 2023: The total number of reported crimes in Pakistan has witnessed a significant increase of 34.3% over the past decade, according to a new study by Gallup Pakistan. Drawing from data in the ‘Pakistan Social Indicators 2021’ compiled by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, the analysis provides a detailed look at the evolving crime landscape in the country.

In 2020 alone, the country recorded 876,430 crimes, a sharp contrast to the 652,383 crimes reported in 2010. Despite this overarching rise, certain categories of crimes saw a decline over the decade. Notably, incidents of murder decreased by 35.7%, attempted murder by 23.7%, and dacoity plummeted by a staggering 72%. Contrarily, kidnapping and abduction incidents edged up by 5.94%.

Other notable findings include a drop in reported robberies and burglaries by 9.1% and 1% respectively between 2010 and 2020. However, cattle theft saw a modest increase, going up by 3.3% during the same period.

These findings, part of Gallup Pakistan’s Big Data Analysis initiative, are critical for policymakers and law enforcement agencies as they shape strategies to address crime and public safety concerns. This information was sourced from a press release by Gallup Pakistan.
