PPP Alleges Election Act Violation in Police Reshuffling, Raises Concerns with Election Commissioner

Islamabad, The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has formally raised concerns with the Chief Election Commissioner regarding what they believe to be a violation of the Election Act 2017. Taj Haider, the in-charge of the party’s central election monitoring cell, has addressed a letter highlighting the reshuffling of senior police officers in Sindh as a potential breach of the act’s section 230 (f).

According to Pakistan People’s Party, Taj Haider’s correspondence pointed out the lack of any clear emergency or urgency that could justify the widespread transfer of senior police officers. This move is seen as a significant deviation from standard procedures outlined in the Election Act 2017, which aims to maintain fairness and transparency in the electoral process.

The letter also brought to the attention of the Chief Election Commissioner an issue concerning the former Director-General (DG) of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), who is now serving as the provincial president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in Sindh. The PPP had previously filed a complaint with the Commission, alleging substantial rigging in the General Election of 2018, orchestrated by the former DG FIA. The recent appointment of the Superintendent of Police (SP) in the District Matiari is particularly troubling to the PPP, as it was in this district that the ex-DG FIA, while still in uniform, was accused of using his influence to alter election results.

Haider’s letter argues that the retired DG FIA seems to be exploiting his previous connections and influence to facilitate new postings that are deemed illegal and unlawful. The PPP expresses its bewilderment at the Election Commission’s apparent approval of these contentious actions, which are in direct conflict with the norms and regulations intended to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
