Karachi, On the occasion of Working Women’s Day, the Pasban Democratic Party has issued a statement emphasizing the vital role of employed women in national development and calling for enhanced support, opportunities, and rights for them in Pakistan.
According to Pasban Democratic Party, the party highlighted that working women, who contribute significantly to the country’s development, deserve respect, kindness, and a conducive work environment. The statement stressed the need for providing them with complete security, freedom at their workplaces, and suitable transportation. It also mentioned the importance of men’s mental training and a shift in social attitudes to prevent sexual harassment and exploitation and to eradicate discriminatory thinking in society.
The Pasban Democratic Party pointed out several challenges faced by working women in Pakistan, including societal backward thinking, domestic issues, gender discrimination, transportation difficulties, and sexual harassment. Despite having the same job responsibilities, women often receive lower pay than their male counterparts. The lack of efficient public transport and the poor condition of buses add to the mental and physical strain of working women. The statement also emphasized that the most pressing issue is sexual harassment and exploitation at work.
The party urged women parliamentarians to enact effective legislation to address these challenges. It noted that, although women make up 28% of the workforce and contribute to their families’ financial support, the majority (72%) of women in Pakistan do not have a role in the practical field, as per a World Development report.
The Pasban Democratic Party called for immediate and official investigation and resolution of complaints regarding workplace harassment. They advocate for the implementation of suitable measures such as technical courses, hostels, and daycare centers for government-employed women. The statement concludes with a call for legislative and practical measures to ensure the safety, dignity, and equal rights of working women in Pakistan.
