Pakistani-American Climate Expert Highlights Urgent Needs in Battling Climate Change

Wah: A prominent environmental expert, Dr. Maryum Bashir, recently appeared on UW FM Radio 101.8 to discuss the escalating climate challenges facing Pakistan. Hosted by Station Manager Umar Hayat Khan, the special episode of the station’s guest podcast series provided a comprehensive overview of the nation’s climate vulnerabilities.

Dr. Bashir, who earned her PhD in Climate Change from the University of Vermont, highlighted significant climate issues, such as intensified monsoons, widespread flooding, and rising temperatures. She emphasized the pressing need for the country to enhance early warning systems and disaster response measures, while also investing in climate-resilient infrastructure.

Despite Pakistan’s minimal contribution to global carbon emissions, accounting for less than 1%, it remains extremely susceptible to climate change impacts. Dr. Bashir described this situation as a clear case of climate injustice and urged wealthier nations to offer support in the form of climate finance, technology transfer, and fair global policies.

Further, she underscored the necessity of sustainable urban planning, resilient agricultural practices, and the active involvement of youth in climate action. Concluding with optimism, Dr. Bashir commended local initiatives, such as tree plantations and solar projects, as encouraging steps toward a more sustainable future for Pakistan.
