Islamabad, 16 Oct 2023: Secretary General of the People’s Party, Syed Nair Bukhari, emphasized the pivotal role of elections in upholding the democratic parliamentary system rooted in the constitution. The statement released by the Pakistan People’s Party underscored its historical contributions to democracy, noting its role in providing the gift of the constitution during undemocratic times, and its sacrifices made for the implementation and preservation of constitutional rights.
Bukhari stressed that the caretaker government’s primary mandate is to ensure transparent elections, and any perceived bias would be seen as partiality. He highlighted the significance of the Electoral College’s presence, encompassing National and Provincial Assemblies, in the election processes of the President and Senate members.
Addressing a specific issue, Bukhari pointed out that Nawaz Sharif received punishment and emphasized the importance of abiding by the law. He remarked that Sharif’s departure abroad was sanctioned by the Imran Khan administration and judicial decisions. Expressing surprise, Bukhari questioned the expectation of any special concessions from the judiciary regarding this matter.
Bukhari concluded by noting that the Election Commission bears responsibility towards the Supreme Court if it fails to meet the constitutional requirements for conducting elections. This information was sourced from a press release by the Pakistan People’s Party.
