Karachi: The high-level parliamentary delegation of Pakistan, led by former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, engaged in discussions with Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, the President of the United Nations Security Council for June. The meeting aimed to update the Security Council on the tense regional climate following recent incidents involving India.
Mr. Bhutto expressed Pakistan’s concerns over India’s allegations regarding the Pahalgam attack, which he claimed lacked proper investigation and evidence. He criticized India’s military actions, including strikes on civilian areas and the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, which he argued jeopardizes regional stability.
Highlighting Pakistan’s stance against terrorism, Mr. Bhutto emphasized that such incidents should not justify unilateral actions that could escalate tensions in South Asia. He called for a ceasefire, the restoration of the Indus Water Treaty’s normal operations, and comprehensive dialogue with India, focusing on resolving the Jammu and Kashmir issue.
The Pakistani delegation urged the Security Council to actively promote de-escalation and conflict resolution. They emphasized the need for the Council to uphold international law and facilitate peaceful resolutions, especially concerning Jammu and Kashmir.
Ambassador Rodrigues-Birkett reiterated the Security Council’s commitment to maintaining global peace and security, aligning with its mandate to address international conflicts.
