Pakistan Cricket Team Aims for Comeback in Boxing Day Test Against Australia at Melbourne

Melbourne, Pakistan is gearing up for a crucial encounter in the Boxing Day Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, seeking to make a strong comeback in the second Test of the three-match series.

According to Pakistan Cricket Board, the team, led by Shan Masood, is determined to turn the tables after their defeat in the series opener at Perth. The practice match against Victoria XI on December 22-23 served as a vital preparation, ending in a draw and offering the players essential match practice.

Pakistan’s performance in Perth was highlighted by the debutants Aamir Jamal and Khurram Shahzad, who claimed seven and five wickets respectively. However, Shahzad’s stress fracture has ruled him out for the remainder of the series, leading to a reshuffle in the squad. Off-spinner Sajid Khan, along with Hasan Ali and Mir Hamza, has been added to the 12-man squad. Mohammad Rizwan will take over wicketkeeping duties from Sarfaraz Ahmed.

Shan Masood emphasized the importance of stability in the team despite the need for tactical changes due to injuries. He expressed confidence in Mir Hamza to fill the void left by Khurram Shahzad. The inclusion of Hasan Ali was based on his impressive Test record and experience, while Rizwan’s selection as wicketkeeper-batter was a tactical decision, given his batting record in similar conditions.

The final decision on the playing XI will be made on the match day, with a close eye on the pitch conditions, particularly for selecting the frontline spin option. Masood highlighted the importance of addressing weaknesses exposed in the Perth Test to compete effectively against Australia. He acknowledged the significance of the Melbourne Test in the context of the World Test Championship standings and the ongoing cycle.
