NA-70 Election Results Highlight Voter Support Challenges

Sialkot: In a revealing outcome from the recent general elections of 2024, the Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-70 Sialkot-I was elected with only 22 percent support from registered voters, raising questions about the representativeness of the electoral system.

According to the Final Consolidated Result (Form-49), the MNA secured 123,495 votes, constituting 42 percent of the 292,428 ballots cast. However, this figure represents just 22 percent of the total 555,752 registered voters in the constituency. The voter turnout for the election stood at 53 percent.

Despite winning the seat, the elected official did not receive the majority support from those who voted. A significant 55 percent, or 161,844 voters, chose other candidates, indicating a preference against the winner. The runner-up candidate garnered 38 percent of the votes, while the third-place finisher received eight percent. Other candidates collectively took nine percent, and two percent of the ballots were declared invalid.

This analysis is part of the Free and Fair Election Network's (FAFEN) ongoing series examining the unrepresentativeness of electoral outcomes in Pakistan. The series critiques the First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) system, which can lead to skewed representation in elections with multiple candidates, common in Pakistan. Such dynamics may leave a majority feeling unrepresented, potentially contributing to political instability.
