MNA Secures Victory in NA-68 with Only 27% of Registered Voter Support

Mandi Bahauddin: In the General Elections of 2024, the Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-68 Mandi Bahauddin-I emerged victorious with 166,229 votes, representing 54 percent of the 307,057 ballots cast. Despite this majority among the polled votes, the winner's support accounted for only 27 percent of the total 613,167 registered voters in the constituency.

The Final Consolidated Result (Form-49) of the constituency revealed a voter turnout of 50 percent. NA-68 was among 70 out of 266 National Assembly constituencies where the winning candidate secured over half of the polled votes. However, 131,642 voters, equating to 43 percent, did not support the winning candidate, which reflects a significant portion of the electorate.

The runner-up garnered 23 percent of the ballots cast, with the third-placed candidate receiving seven percent, and remaining candidates collectively obtaining 13 percent of the votes. Additionally, 9,186 ballots, or three percent of the total, were declared invalid.

This data forms part of a broader analysis by the Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) on the representativeness of Pakistan's electoral outcomes. The report addresses concerns that the First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) system may distort representation in multi-candidate contests, where a majority of voters might feel underrepresented, potentially affecting political stability.
