McCain Institute Launches Fellowship to Defend Democracy with Global Leaders Program

Washington, The McCain Institute has officially opened applications for its McCain Global Leaders Program, aimed at nurturing character-driven leaders from around the globe to tackle future challenges through specialized training, resources, and access to influential networks. The program is designed as a 12-month fellowship, promising an immersive learning experience for a diverse cohort of 25 leaders committed to advancing democracy, human rights, and freedom.

According to Pak NGOs, the 2024 iteration of the program will focus on “Defending Democracy,” recognizing the urgent threats democracy faces worldwide, including authoritarianism, disinformation, polarization, violent extremism, and conflict. The program will draw inspiration from Senator John McCain’s legacy of defending democracy, aiming to equip leaders with the necessary tools to champion democratic values in their home countries and regions. Participants will engage in both regional and global programming to connect with a targeted professional peer group and a broader network of global peers.

The McCain Institute will cover all direct costs associated with participation in the program, such as economy class travel, accommodations, and visas, in addition to providing a stipend for incidental expenses. The program demands significant commitment from McCain Global Leaders (MGLs), including presence during all in-person and virtual modules, totaling about 25 days of in-person programming across three travel experiences and a monthly commitment of 6-8 hours for virtual programs.

MGLs are expected to adhere to a strict code of conduct that emphasizes respect, character, and professionalism. They are also responsible for familiarizing themselves with and obtaining necessary entry visas for host countries in a timely manner. While MGLs are encouraged to pursue individual or collaborative projects inspired by their participation, adherence to the program’s requirements and code of conduct is mandatory, with the possibility of removal for non-compliance.

Eligibility for the program is broad, targeting mid to senior-career professionals from all countries and sectors with a working proficiency in English and active engagement in leadership roles within the program’s focus areas. The McCain Institute seeks applicants dedicated to serving causes greater than themselves, with at least five years of career experience. Participants are chosen for their potential to effect change in their communities and their commitment to active participation in the program and subsequent alumni activities.
