Low Voter Support Highlights Representation Issues in NA-76 Election

Narowal: During the 2024 General Elections, the Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from the NA-76 Narowal-II constituency was elected with only 22 percent support from registered voters. According to Free and Fair Election Network, the winning candidate received 137,042 votes, representing 44 percent of the 308,849 ballots cast. Despite securing a victory, this figure accounted for just 22 percent of the total 609,280 registered voters in the constituency.

The Final Consolidated Result (Form-49) revealed a voter turnout of 51 percent. Of those who voted, 53 percent, or 163,915 individuals, chose candidates other than the winner. This indicates that a majority of voters who participated in the election did not wish for the elected MNA to represent them. The runner-up candidate garnered 36 percent of the votes, while the third-placed candidate received 11 percent. The remaining candidates collectively secured six percent of the votes. Additionally, 7,892 ballots, or three percent, were declared invalid.

This report forms part of FAFEN’s analysis on the unrepresentativeness of Pakistan’s electoral outcomes. The series examines how the First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) electoral system can distort representation in contests with multiple candidates. In such elections, a significant number of voters may feel unrepresented, raising questions about electoral legitimacy and potentially contributing to political instability.
