Rawalpindi: The Lighthouse, a division of Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, has become a critical resource for those with irreversible vision impairment, offering a range of vision aids and rehabilitation services that have transformed the lives of over 70,000 patients since its establishment in 2009. The facility provides innovative tools and training to help patients regain their independence and improve their quality of life.
According to Maj Gen (Retd) Rehmat Khan, President of Al-Shifa Trust, the Lighthouse serves a diverse group of individuals, including children with educational challenges and adults dealing with conditions such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. The department has distributed more than 3,000 specialized low-vision devices, empowering patients to navigate daily activities with greater ease.
Patients can access the Lighthouse’s services through various channels, including referrals, direct visits, and online records, ensuring seamless care continuity. For those with partial sight, the facility offers tools such as magnifiers, telescopes, reading lamps, and AI-based applications to support education, employment, and daily living.
For individuals who are completely blind, the Lighthouse provides comprehensive training in mobility, Braille literacy, and the use of AI applications. Children are directed to specialized educational institutions, while adults receive referrals to vocational training centers for skill development.
Elderly patients benefit from customized support, including large-print materials, electronic readers, and home safety advice. The facility also offers counseling to mitigate feelings of isolation, and families are guided on how to best support their visually impaired members.
Initially a single clinic, the Lighthouse has expanded to three centers, each equipped to serve 50 to 60 patients daily with the help of trained specialists and advanced equipment. According to Manager Mahreen, the mission extends beyond eye care, focusing on restoring confidence, independence, and dignity.
Remarkably, 80 percent of patients receive rehabilitation services at no cost, underscoring the Lighthouse’s commitment to serving as a beacon of hope and possibility for those facing vision loss.
