Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences Details Significant Progress in 14th Senate Meeting

Jamshoro, The 14th Meeting of the Senate of Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS), held on December 22, 2023, marked a significant review of the university’s progress and developments since its last meeting in 2016.

According to Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Vice Chancellor Prof. Ikram Din Ujjan reflected on the journey of the university from 2016 to 2023, noting the vibrant progress made during this period. He highlighted the launch of new academic programs, the establishment of Bilawal Medical College, the commencement of a College of Technology, and the recent addition of the Thatta Campus.

Prof. Ujjan reported that in this interval, the university conducted 15 meetings of the Syndicate, 14 of the Academic Council, 17 of the Advance Studies and Research Board, nine of the Finance and Planning Committee, and 14 meetings of the Selection Board. He proudly announced the launch of the Executive MBA Program and a collaborative training program in the USA with Silicon Valley, California, which benefited 29 students of the first batch.

Addressing curriculum changes, Prof. Ujjan explained the shift from a traditional basic sciences focus in the first two years to an integrated Modular system, combining basic sciences with clinical training. He emphasized that research courses have become an essential part of training, a component previously lacking in the traditional curriculum.

The Vice Chancellor also mentioned the launch of the International Masters in Public Health Program in 2022, in collaboration with Nanjing University China. The first batch of students has been sent to China for training and research. Additionally, programs in Master of Science in Public Health and Executive MBA were launched last year.

LUMHS has also developed international research collaborations with Oxford University faculty members. Notable infrastructural achievements include the establishment of a Sports Complex for female students, a Hostel for postgraduate students, and the Institute of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation at Bilawal College.

Furthermore, the university plans to commence the LUMHS International Medical and Technical College at Thatta and establish a campus at Prem Nagar, Islamkot Tharparkar. Prof. Ujjan announced plans to expand the Medical Research Centre into an Institute of Cancer Research, with the building nearing completion.

The Senate members unanimously approved the University’s Annual Reports up to the year 2023 and the University Expenditures and Budget Estimates up to the year 2024, highlighting the university’s commitment to advancing medical education and research.
