Leaders Strategize at Symposium to Strengthen Pakistan’s Primary Health Care

Karachi: The Aga Khan University (AKU), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of National Health Services Regulation and Coordination and Provincial Health Departments, has hosted the Primary Health Care (PHC) Symposium. This gathering was part of the PHC Learning Agenda Initiative, aimed at developing strategies to achieve Universal Health Coverage through a PHC approach in Pakistan.

Primary health care serves as the cornerstone of Pakistan’s health system, particularly in rural areas where a majority of the population resides. The symposium focused on exploring innovative solutions and research-driven strategies to strengthen this sector. The PHC Learning Agenda, a two-year initiative supported by the Gates Foundation, seeks to enhance the readiness and resilience of primary health care across provinces.

Dr. Sulaiman Shahabuddin, President of AKU, emphasized the fundamental role of primary health care in building people-centered health systems. He highlighted the need for accessible and equitable care to achieve universal health coverage and the health-related Sustainable Development Goals.

Professor Sameen Siddiqi from AKU outlined five priorities for PHC enhancement. These included integrating health and population services, addressing non-communicable diseases, collaborating with the private sector, improving service quality, and investing in domestic health financing.

Federal Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal, in a video message, reiterated the government’s commitment to PHC reforms through public-private partnerships and digital health initiatives. The symposium featured discussions on critical areas such as financing, governance, health information, and community engagement.

High-profile attendees included provincial health ministers and advisors, reflecting a nationwide commitment to advancing primary health care. The event was supported by international organizations like the Gates Foundation, UNICEF, and the World Bank.

Dr. David Wilson of the Gates Foundation highlighted the foundation’s support for this collaborative platform, aiming to ensure best practices in primary health care are implemented across Pakistan.
